Browsing the internet, you can easily see problems caused by website designers on web sites. This is a list of the 18 most common website design mistakes, they may seem small mistakes but these mistakes can have a huge effect on your website traffic.

  1. Slow Websites . Website that take too long to load, surfers are increasingly expecting instant delivery of sites so anything taking more than 10 seconds is considered slow. Slow web loading is not a huge problem for a website now that everything seems to be getting faster and faster. If your web pages take too long to load people will move on to another site even before they see yours. So it does not matter how great your page looks, if it is slow, it is badly affecting your traffic. Web designers need to take notice of speed of loading pages as well as how 'pretty' they look.
  2. No Easy Route back to Web Home Page. Every web page should have an obvious button back to the home page or a logo at the top of every that is linked to the home page. This is a very easy web need but yet it is forgotten by many web designers. A logo or button in the same place on every page gives your website uniformity and relability from a web users view. This is so easy to get right but is missed by so many websites.
  3. Difficult to Read Script. Posts with too many words in a line making it hard to read and posts with too few words on a line can be equally annoying to read. Display your text the way you would find easy to read and scanned. If your script is difficult to read, it probably will not be read.
  4. No Contact Us Page. If there is no 'Contact Us' page, your web site obviously doesnt want to be contacted. Why would not any website have a 'Contact Us' page? There is nothing worse than having to search for contact details on a web site. In addition a contact page with contact details adds credibility to any website.
  5. Fancy fonts . If the font style used on a web page is not available on a computer, a default style will be used which may or may not make your script unreadable on some PCs with writing appearing to be over small or over big in the default style, so destroying the 'look' of the web page. Why risk this happening? Your web site is designed to look good, so make it look good using commonly used font styles or font sizes too tiny.
  6. External links that open in same Window . It can be very frustrating to be taken away from a site that you found that is really good when you click a link. Sometimes it is not easy to return find the page again which may mean you never return, so the site has lost a potential customer. All external links should be scripted to open in a new window, leaving the original page open behind. This is sign of poor web design.
  7. Website appears different on different Browsers. Maybe the web site is fine in Firefox, but is broken in Internet Explorer. This happens a lot and must result in lost traffic. It does not take long to check cross compatibility of website appearance on different browsers.
  8. Address of Webpages All the Same. This is called 'cloaking' where the URL remains the same despite clicking through numerous pages. Why try to 'trick' the search engines or Google? Is it worth having your website blacklisted?
  9. Very Large Screen size of Web pages . Webpage is so large that they must be scrolled horizontally as well as vertically. Why make it difficult for anyone to see your page? The less scrolling the better especially as screens are getting smaller and smaller with mobile internet usage. Why make it difficult for a viewer to see and read your website?
  10. Unreadable CAPTCHA . Is it a 0 or O? Is it a 1 or I? Some are so difficult to read that you do not bother or give up. This was not the web designers purpose, the purpose is prove you are human not robot. So why not make things more easy for the viewer?
  11. Difficult Navigation. When there is no way to find what is needed. This is very frustrating. Why create a website that is difficult to navigate? All sites should be easy to navigate.
  12. Links to '.pdf' files. This is a pet hate. Pdf files take longer to load and sometimes will only load if the most up to date adobe is installed. Why use pdf files on websites? Why make life difficult for their website viewers?
  13. Too Many Ads . Webpages cluttered with so many ads you can not see the main script. Three ads per page is plenty. After all is your website an advertising board or is it an informative web site? Affiliate sites are always full of ads can be very chaotic.
  14. Poor Color Design. Colors are very important on websites, they help convey the feel and tone of a site as well as the readability. Choices like white text on light blue background will b. With all the colors to choice from why make a web site difficult to read? Color choices can make or break a web site design and flavor.
  15. No 'Alt' and 'Title' tags for images . These tags are a key part of site seo. Just because you can not see what you write in tags, does not mean you should leave them empty.
  16. Posts are not dated . Show that you are active and posting regularly. Not sure why anyone would leave out dates on posts unless they post so rarely that they want a post in 2006 to seem current in 2011? Be upfront on your website, show people you are current.
  17. Page says 'Coming soon'. Better to wait till web design is uploaded rather than put 'Coming Soon'. So delay any advertising till website is ready.
