Every day people ask me for restaurant marketing ideas and tips. The problem with that is that so many restaurant owners and those doing digital marketing for restaurants are not very committed in creating a solid restaurant marketing plan. They are ALL over the place. Always just hunting for the NEXT growth hack or the next restaurant social media hack for Instagram.
And when they find that cool hack and wonder why it didn’t work for them, they rage and dismiss it. Little do they know that there goes more than just implementing a hack. Restaurant marketing is much more than that. Business is much more than that.
Which is why I wanted to run through the BASICS of how to create a practical restaurant marketing strategy plan. That way you can work towards building a successful restaurant business that is constantly striving to improve sales, get customers, and build a community that actually cares about your small business. This all starts by first understanding the accepting that having a solid marketing plan is key. Then to figure what exactly you’re wanting.
Everyone wants more customers. That could be in terms of sales OR building a community. Both will get you more customers, but the methods differ. Identifying it will help you have a clearer plan of action. Once you’re clear, you can now brainstorm relevant activities for you to get more sales or build a community for your restaurant. This may be running sale driven seasonal restaurant promotions like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day or Happy Hour. Or doing restaurant social media giveaways or email giveaways to build your community to constantly market to and nurture. Once you’ve put all your ideas on the wall, you can determine what platform is best for these activities. For some, your restaurant’s instagram marketing would be key. For others it would be print outs or email blasts. Or it could be tech that needs to be installed. Whatever the case may be, you want to make sure you don’t make the mistake of spreading yourself too thin and being on TOO many platforms.
Next is to put all these things together and transform it into a SMART goal. That way you can run through the exercise to make sure your plan is specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and timely. It helps you avoid making lofty goals that are ambiguous and gives your team a vision to aim for. I recommend your plan stick to 2 goals max. Next thing is to work backwards and create that timeline! Start with your goal in mind, then ask yourself what needs to be done the step right before that? Then before that one? Then before that one? All the way until you get to the initial planning stage. Lastly is to execute based on the timeline and track along the way. That way, you can analyze how you’re doing and make improvements.
