BUKIT MERTAJAM: Happy and excited over Anwar Ibrahim’s appointment as prime minister, 75-year-old contractor G Subramaniam has been treating people to meals at several restaurants and coffee shops in Anwar’s home ground of Permatang Pauh.
Subramaniam said his whole family had waited over 20 years for Anwar to become the country’s number one.
“I have been spending my money on meals for whoever is present at the coffee shops or restaurants I visited, and will continue doing this until Friday,” he said when met at a thanksgiving event to mark Anwar’s appointment.
“It is a one-week celebration for a dream come true and we have never been this joyful even when celebrating Deepavali,” he said.
He would not reveal how much money he had spent since last Friday, when Anwar took office.
The thanksgiving event drew an overwhelming response, with more than 2,000 people turning up.
Penanti MP Dr Norlela Ariffin of PKR said she did not expect such a large crowd at the ceremony as Pakatan Harapan volunteers had prepared food for only 600 guests.“The organisers have to cook extra to ensure everyone gets some food,” she said.
