As Malaysia and China is top source market for Thailand, Muhammad F. Zakaria eyes on Luxury Market

At AITEX 2024 in Selangor, Malaysia, Muhammad Faiz Zakaria, Marketing Officer of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, shared insights on Thailand’s evolving strategies to attract Islamic travelers and boost tourism across key markets. In a candid conversation, he explained the country’s approach to accommodating Muslim tourists and expanding its presence beyond traditional tourist hubs.

Zakaria highlighted Thailand’s push for secondary cities, noting that while destinations like Hat Yai remain popular among Malaysian tourists, new efforts are being made to promote other provinces like Pattani, which offer Muslim-friendly hotels and halal food options. This aligns with the country’s broader goal of diversifying its tourism offerings and developing under-explored regions.

When asked about luxury tourism, Zakaria mentioned Thailand’s focus on Phuket and Phang Nga, which cater to high-end tourists with luxury hotels and yacht tourism. Additionally, the northern regions are promoting luxury stays within natural environments, allowing travelers to enjoy high-end amenities surrounded by Thailand’s rich forests.

In terms of market performance, Zakaria revealed that Malaysia was Thailand’s top market last year, followed by China. However, with China reopening, it has reclaimed the number one spot, with Malaysia now in second place. European travelers, including from Russia, Germany, and the UK, remain important, especially for their high spending, though their numbers are smaller due to longer travel distances.

Zakaria also emphasized Thailand’s commitment to sustainability, citing initiatives like converting recycled plastics into t-shirts for events like the Krabi Vegetarian Festival. He underscored the country’s future tourism strategy for 2025, focusing on five themes: “Thai Mass Try,” “Mass Eat,” “Mass See,” “Mass Sink,” and “Mass Buy”—designed to give tourists a full spectrum of experiences.

In conclusion, Zakaria’s vision for the future of Thai tourism reflects a commitment to sustainable growth, expanding secondary cities, and attracting a wider range of travelers.
