Canon Announces EOS R8, Its Most Compact EOS Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

0

Alongside the EOS R50, Canon also recently introduced a brand new full-frame mirrorless camera known as the EOS R8. According to the company, the device features the powerful and still shooting capabilities of its EOS R6 Mark II, but in a smaller and lighter body that’s akin to its EOS RP model. In fact, Canon touts it to be the most compact full-frame mirrorless camera it has ever produced.

Backing that claim, the company says the new Canon EOS R8 weighs at approximately 461 grams, which is actually about 20 grams lighter than the EOS RP. Its body features moisture-sealed covers, a flip-out 3-inch LCD touchscreen with 1.62 million dots resolution, and a 0.39-inch OLED electronic viewfinder with 2.36 million dots resolution. Besides that, the camera comes with LP-E17 battery pack support, a USB-C port for charging and live streaming, a Micro HDMI, as well as a 3.5mm microphone and headphone jack.

Internally, the EOS R8 is equipped with the same 24 MP sensor as the EOS R6 Mark II, along with the same Dual Pixel AF capabilities, AI-powered subject recognition, and Canon’s DIGIC X image processor. There’s no in-body image stabilisation or mechanical shutter, though it does feature digital 5-axis stabilisation and a fully electronic shutter that’s capable of shooting from six to 40 frames per second.

As for low light performance, the EOS R8 supports up to EV-6.5 for stills and EV-4.2 for video, as well as featuring a high native ISO speed range of up to 102,400 for photos and 25,600 for video recordings. Other noteworthy built-in features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, Focus Breathing Correction, 6x slow motion video recording at FHD 180p, and a new automated shooting assistance mode that’s activated by turning the Mode dial to the “A+” setting.

Like the EOS R50, the new Canon EOS R8 is expected to be available in certain markets sometime in spring 2023. Body alone, the camera is set to retail for US$ 1,500 (~RM 6,474), while bundled together with a RF 24-50mm kit lens will cost you US$ 1,700 (~RM 7,337). Even though it is already listed on Canon Malaysia’s website, details regarding its potential local launch and pricing are still unknown at this time.
