There have been many ongoing discussions on social media about incompetent job seekers and how they respond to job offers by a company. However, this recent one has more people siding with the jobseeker – because it involves a furry companion.
Twitter user Farid Affy shared the situation, which started with a conversation between Jameela, a hiring manager, and Rohani, a potential interviewee. Included with the conversation screenshot was the caption, “Cat or going to an interview?” In the screenshot, Jameela asked Rohani if she was available for an interview the next day at 2:30PM. However, Rohani apologised and declined the offer, saying she needed to take her cat to the veterinary clinic.
The sharing had many netizens debating who was in the right between Jameela and Rohani. On one side, many said the HR was right because of how Rohani responded. They claimed that the candidate left a bad impression because of how quickly she rejected the interview. Others believed that she should not have mentioned the cat as it was a personal issue, saying that it showed her incompetence.
However, most netizens said that the HR was wrong and that Rohani was right to prioritise her cat. Many stated the reason was the last-minute invite because Jameela had messaged the candidate at 5PM when the interview was slated for the next day, adding that Rohani could’ve made her prior plans way earlier. Some said the HR was wrong for making Rohani choose between the job and her cat, saying that it shows how little they value people’s private lives.
A few also said both were wrong and they could’ve communicated better for a mutually beneficial outcome. Some also called out Farid Affy, who is also a HR employee, for being unprofessional and petty by publicising a private conversation to get people to side with them.
Who do you think was in the right in this situation?
