Central Market : Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Central Market (Pasar Seni), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Centre for Malaysian Culture, Heritage, Art & Craft

Central Market Kuala Lumpur began life as a wet market in 1888, built by Yap Ah Loy, the city’s Chinese Kapitan. It served as a prominent landmark in colonial and modern-day Kuala Lumpur. When the wet market was relocated in the 1980s, the Malaysian Heritage Society successfully petitioned against the demolition of the building, and it was subsequently declared as a centre of Malaysian art, culture and handicraft.

Central Market Kuala Lumpur is today a major attraction for both tourists and Malaysians alike. It has evolved a great deal since then and now it stands firm as the landmark which symbolizes all the culture and heritage of our multi-racial country. You will immediately notice that the theme of the market is based solely on the various cultures in Malaysia. The shops here are divided based on the groups of races. Representing each of the races in Malaysia are the Straits Chinese, the Lorong Melayu and Lorong India.

The Annexe Gallery

The Annexe Gallery, located in the Central Market Annexe building, was launched in January 2007 as a centre for contemporary arts.

Perfectly complementing the more traditional Central Market, The Annexe Gallery provides spaces for the ongoing expression of present generations. Since opening, there have attracted countless youths and adults seeking ideas, insights and inspiration.
