Chinatown’s night market serves as the area’s main attraction – even bigger and more happening than during the daytime – giving you a kind of nightlife that is quite different from what you may be used to. Soak in the atmosphere of this legendary night market as you trawl the rows of shops and stalls in what is deemed the mother of all night markets. The nightlife in Chinatown is in a league of its own; it’s not about rows of clubs, pubs and bars offering music-and-alcohol-fuelled entertainment, but the extra colour that seems to grow more vibrant at night, lighting up Petaling Street and its surroundings. The Reggae Bar and The Beatles Bar are situated just across the road from each other, offering a laid-back environment to chill out in.

At the heart of Kuala Lumpur is an area which never sleeps, and far more colourful and bustling than its bigger and more glamourous neighbours, KLCC & Bukit Bintang. Chinatown, based in Petaling Street, is also known as ‘Chee Cheong Kai’ (Starch Factory Street), a reference to its roots as a tapioca-producing district. Deeply immersed in Oriental culture, heritage and history, Chinatown is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia. Chinatown is also a well-known bargain hunter’s paradise, a place where you can find all sorts of stuff from Chinese herbs to imitation goods. At night, its main market area, Petaling Street, transforms into a lively and vibrant night market, filled with hundreds of stalls offering all kinds of goods at dirt-cheap prices. You can find some really nice dresses, cute slippers that I use often when I head towards beach. It was fun. Chinatown Kuala Lumpur attractions are made up of beautiful temples, sprawling flea markets, and quirky art galleries, all of which are definite must-visits on any traveller’s sightseeing itinerary. Accessible within a five-minute walk from Pasar Seni LRT station, the blue-hued Central Market and the neighbouring Kasturi Walk house a warren of boutiques, handicraft and souvenir stalls while Petaling Street is a lively and vibrant night market with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of stuff at dirt-cheap prices. Deeply immersed in Oriental culture, heritage and history, it is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia, and holds its own against its more glamorous neighbours, KLCC & Bukit Bintang. Representing Malaysia’s multihued multicultural background perfectly, you can find all sorts of stuff, from Chinese herbs to imitation goods in this area.
All around, you see many traders selling their wares. This place is very popular with tourists looking for lasting, fake goods. If you don’t mind fake goods, then you can walk out of Petaling Street carrying a couple of Louis Vuitton or Chanel bags.
As with many pioneer towns, Kuala Lumpur was filled with a population that was largely made up of male labourers. Men who could afford it spent their leisure time at the brothels, and at the widely available opium dens and gambling booths. Many stayed at crowded lodges where they slept on wooden beds right one top of the other, or in straw beds in the corridors. Sometimes they even slept in shifts when the space they slept on was rented out to others while they were worked.
