Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil says consumers would normally buy essential items from one store.
PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil said it would be cumbersome for consumers to visit different outlets to shop for reasonably priced essential goods.
Consumers, he said, would normally purchase products from one place.
“We (consumers) don’t buy rice, chicken, fish, and vegetables from different stores. We don’t check which places sell these items at a cheaper price and buy from there.
“If we need to buy 10 items, we don’t go to 10 different places (to buy them),” said Isham in a video which was uploaded on his Facebook account.
He said this in response to the suggestion by economic affairs minister Rafizi Ramli that consumers abstain from buying household items from retailers who sell them at very high prices in a bid to curb inflation.
Separately, Isham said the ringgit could be strengthened by luring foreign investors to the country.
He said it was important for the government to work on restoring confidence in foreign investors to buy the ringgit.
“Therefore, ministers who go overseas to woo investors need to bring them (foreign investors) in quickly so that they will buy the ringgit. And this will have a (positive) effect for us.”
Yesterday, Bernama reported that the ringgit traded mostly lower throughout the week amid a weak economic front globally.
It is, however, expected to trade higher against the US dollar next week.
