PETALING JAYA: The data in the alleged leakage involving almost 13 million Malaysians in December last year does not match the data used by Astro and Maybank, says communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.
This effectively confirms the denial by Astro and Maybank that their databases had been compromised or leaked on a website.
In a written Dewan Rakyat reply, Fahmi said the Personal Data Protection Department and CyberSecurity Malaysia had launched a probe into the alleged data leak on Dec 30, 2022.
The findings of their probe were then submitted to the National Cybersecurity Agency (Nacsa).
“CyberSecurity Malaysia had also implemented a verification process on the data allegedly leaked from Astro and Maybank, but found that it did not match the actual data used by the two organisations,” he said.
The minister reiterated the ministry’s commitment to safeguard the security of the people’s personal data.
In December, a Facebook user claimed that user information of nearly 13 million Malaysians from Maybank, Astro and Election Commission (EC) websites had been leaked.
According to the post, a website listed details of 3.5 million Astro subscribers and 1.8 million Maybank customers, as well as 7.2 million voters at 7.56pm on Dec 25.
The leaked information allegedly involved the login ID, full name, date of birth, address and identity card number of users.
Fahmi did not comment on the alleged leakage of EC data.
