PETALING JAYA: Two million foreign workers are likely to get EPF coverage under amendments to be tabled next week, according to Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn, chief executive of the retirment fund.
He said the amendments to the Employees Provident Fund Act 1991 will compel foreign workers to contribute to the fund.
“Foreign workers can currently join the EPF voluntarily, but for it to be mandatory, amendments to the Act are required,” he was reported to have said.
The proposed contribution will be 2% each for migrant workers and employers.
Zulqarnain said the withdrawal mechanism for migrant workers will be disclosed in the next two months.
Foreign workers have been allowed to voluntarily contribute to EPF at a rate of either 11% for those aged below 60, or 5.5% for others.
