PETALING JAYA: The government will allocate supplementary subsidies totalling about RM100 million to Felda to cover increases in plantation operating costs due to the removal of blanket subsidies for diesel, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Launching the Felda Settlers’ Day 2024 celebration at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang today, Anwar said this is in consideration of the additional financial implications of RM121.6 million a year that Felda will bear because of the increased diesel prices.
“The government has implemented targeted diesel subsidies to tackle the smuggling and leakage of subsidised diesel.
“At the same time, the government has prepared aid for targeted groups in need, including smallholders,” he said.
Anwar also announced the government’s approval of RM31.7 million for 317 Felda settlements under its Sejahtera Komuniti Madani programme.
“Felda’s involvement in the programme has boosted economic activities at the community level.
“The (Felda) communities have been given freedom to decide their sectors of focus, from food and agriculture, stitchwork and handicrafts to tourism and hospitality,” he said.
Effective June 10, the government set the retail price of diesel at RM3.35 per litre at all petrol stations throughout Peninsular Malaysia, while the price in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan remained at RM2.15 per litre.
