PETALING JAYA: The premium for the green electricity tariff programme will be maintained at 10 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for low-voltage users and 20 sen/kWh for medium- and high-voltage users next year.
At least 6,600 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of green electricity will be offered under the programme next year, said the energy transition and water transformation ministry.
Launched in 2021, the programme allows consumers to purchase electricity sourced from renewable energy such as solar, wind and hydropower. They will pay the premiums on top of their regular power bills.
It is part of the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support corporate environmental goals, the ministry said in a statement.
From 2025, there will be an option to subscribe to the programme for up to three years, with discounted premiums offered to those who subscribe for longer periods.
While new subscriptions can be made from March 1, users will be able to backdate it to Jan 1. They will be exempted from imbalance cost pass-through (ICPT) charges for the portion of green electricity they use.
Those opting out of the programme earlier will be subject to a penalty of 2 sen/kWh for unused electricity.
Since its introduction, the green electricity tariff programme has supplied over 9,400 GWh of green electricity to more than 3,000 users, including households and businesses, the ministry said.
