How to Choose a Great Name For Your Non-Profit Organization

What's in a name? Everything.

Choosing a name for your organization can be challenging. Why? Because a great name must:

o Be Simple o Be Memorable o State what the organization does o Encourage beneficies o Invitations Donations

Most organizations choose a name that is too long. The longer the name, the harder it is to remember. Invariably, the community shortens the name. The Eudorianese Health Care Center for Women "becomes known as" The Women's Clinic. "The longer name certainly states what the organization does, but the shorter version does. choose one that is simple and direct.

The Women's Clinic is a great name. It is encouraging to beneficiaries (women) and states that this organization is squarely focused on women's health. The name is simple, easy to remember and potential donors (and the community) can easily recognize the purpose.

I have talked with several people that have had great ideas for non-profit organizations. Their vision and mission was wonderful, however, the name they had chosen for the organization did not match their purpose. Some names were actually depressing. I encouraged them to choose another. Names carrying a negative overtone are uninspiring to beneficaries and potential donors.

Before you incorporated, check with your state to ensure that the name you have chosen is not in use. Most states have a website. You should be able to find your state's official site by entering "state of _______." Usually, information regarding non-profit entities will be in the business section.
