You may have writers block, you may not, but if ever you wanted to increase your marketing writing skills this is for you.
Your brain has two sides, the left side and right side and each is responsible for certain functions. Left side is what traditional education focuses on more, which is the maths, numbers, facts, figures, data, analytical thinking side. We’ve been taught how to use this side of our brain all throughout childhood.
We’ve been taught this is what matters most, when in fact our right brain is where true success in life can come from.
Our right brain controls our creative, visionary, imaginative, emotional functions. But where have we been taught how to use and develop these aspects of our brain?
Society says its bad to make a mistake, we feel we need to be right about doing things in life, as we don’t want to do something wrong. This is the problem. This is why we find it hard to write creatively with marketing.
As we’ve been taught to use our right brain, we’ve naturally learnt how to analyze everything. As a result we’re stuck in what I call Binary or Logic Thinking. We think things are either right, or they are wrong and there is nothing in between. So we think the same about our creative writing, its either good or its bad and nothing in between.
But where is the learning and development when things either have to be either right or wrong?
So enough of the background, I think we understand the problem, now lets look at the solution.
Let me ask you this, when you think about writing do you try to write it in your head before you put anything down on paper? I’m willing to bet you do.
That’s another aspect of societies conditioning, we don’t like to make mistakes. But this condition also reveals the secret to how to deal with the problem.
Let me put it to you this way, stop analyzing everything you think and start writing. Remember it this way, if you think it, ink it.
In other words, give yourself amnesia every time you think of something creatively. If you have a thought about what to say when you start to think about your marketing, type it up immediately – before your left brain kicks in and says, that’s not good.
Your left brain and right brain can’t compete. Your left brain will win every time.
The only way to write is to put your left brain on hold. Write without a thought in your mind. Let it just come out, don’t think about it, just keep writing, don’t analyze, don’t criticize, just write.
Before you know it you will have hundreds of words on your page.
Here’s one more point on overcoming writers block…
Be happy! In other words mentally prepare yourself before you write anything. Don’t try to force yourself to write at a certain time, your right brain doesn’t work like that.
Your right brain is unstructured, non conforming, expressive, illogical and emotional. It responds to happiness, enjoyment and spontaneity, not rules. To write you need to become friends with your right brain, let it have its way, let it try this just for the heck of it, let it be spontaneous. If you get a thought for a headline, or marketing idea, just ink it as soon as you think it.
Let your brain go, let it wander, let it write and express whatever it likes. Don’t make rules, or make it conform; let it do what it likes.
When you’ve written hundreds of words and exhausted the subject for the time being, then you can slowly go over what you have written, but not before.
Before you know it you’ll have written hundreds of words in minutes as I just have.
