Mercedes-AMG performance SUV teased – AMG.EA platform-based model to undergo testing from winter

Mercedes-Benz performance arm, Mercedes-AMG has teased its upcoming model, which the manufacturer says is its first standalone, high-performance SUV, and the second to be built on the AMG.EA platform for fully electric vehicles; the first will be an electric sedan that is currently being developed, and which was previewed by the Vision AMG concept.

Models built on the AMG.EA platform will be “AMG first, EV second” in its philosophy, according to Mercedes-Benz, and these will “not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance”, said Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe.

Its use of the AMG.EA platform means that the upcoming Mercedes-AMG standalone SUV model will get axial flux electric motor technology from British firm Yasa which Mercedes-Benz acquired in 2021, an these motors were described at the time as being vastly superior in terms of power to weight, while providing outstanding efficiency and endlessly repeatable performance.

For now, Mercedes-Benz has yet to disclose performance figures, battery range or a launch date, though the manufacturer stated that development vehicles for the upcoming standalone AMG SUV will commence testing in winter.

Among rivals, one that matches the billing of being a standalone SUV model from a high-performance division is the BMW XM, though the BMW employs a plug-in hybrid powertrain that features a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 engine and an electric motor, bringing combined outputs of 653 PS and 800 Nm of torque.
