Mixed marriage suggestion just an opinion, says PAS Youth chief

PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden challenged Umno to leave the government, saying it had failed to defend Islam in its lack of opposition to DAP leaders such as Seputeh MP Teresa Kok for meddling in Muslim affairs such as halal certification.

TEMERLOH: The proposal for PAS Youth members to marry non-Malays and increase non-Malay votes is just the view of a delegate and should not be taken seriously, says PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.

Afnan said Selangor PAS Youth secretary Aubidullah Fahim Ibrahim had only expressed his opinion as a delegate during the muktamar.

“This is not a party decision. It is only his view as a muktamar delegate. He has the right to voice his opinion,” he told the media during PAS Youth’s 65th muktamar at Kompleks Al-Makmur, Kerdau, here.

Earlier, Aubidullah had jokingly challenged Afnan and Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar to lead the way.

He said mixed marriages would not only help capture one vote, but “tens and hundreds of votes” from non-Malays.

Aubidullah’s proposal came in the wake of a call by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man for the wing to focus on wooing the support of the non-Malays so the party could helm the federal government after the next election.

Meanwhile, Afnan challenged Umno to leave the government, saying it had failed to defend Islam in its lack of opposition to DAP leaders such as Seputeh MP Teresa Kok for meddling in Muslim affairs such as halal certification.

He said if Umno truly wants to defend Islam and the Malays, it should leave the unity government and not worry about losing power.

“I don’t see Umno leaders in the government today defending Islam. If they can defend Islam, why has DAP been so vocal?” he said.

When asked if PAS is willing to work with Umno should the latter leave the government, Afnan said PAS remains open based on the unity of the “ummah”.
