Off-Page Search Engine Optimization Strategies

0

The search engine optimization game has been getting tougher and tougher by the day as Google releases its countless updates generally named after animals. Although there is a decent amount of traffic that comes from other search engines, Google is obviously your priority because you will see roughly 70% of your organic traffic coming from it. All of the other engines use very similar algorithms so if you play by Google's rules then you should be good in the books of all the other players.

The first update that had webmasters scratching their head was the "Panda" update that Google released just over a year ago. It primarily focuses on your on-page content (the writing and formatting of the content on your website). It simply attempts to thwart over-optimization by penalizing websites that are focusing too heavily on one keyword. Follow my other SEO guide for tips on optimizing the content of your website and how to make Google-friendly websites and articles. You will want to implement all of these concepts when it comes to writing content to create links and drive traffic to your primary website.

The second important update in the last little while was the Penguin update. This is the infamous update that absolutely destroyed websites that were using shady link-building practices. This made it so that the quality of the links pointing back to your website were much more important than the sheer number of them. It used to be far too easy for people to implement these strategies that involved pointing tens of thousands of links and achieving quick success. Let me be very clear and let you know that this technique WILL NOT WORK anymore. This is a step in the right direction and will cut down on internet-wide spam all over the world because it is now frivolous. If your website has been affected by low quality links then you should be actively contacting webmasters and trying to get them removed in conjunction with Google's Disavow Tool . You will need a Google Account with Webmaster Tools associated with your website to use this tool. It is very easy to use but can be very monotonous and time-consuming depending on the volume of links that need to be negated.

So what techniques can you use today that will provide long-term results survival whatever animal-themed updates Google has in the pipeline? Just create quality links that point back to your site. It is not enough to simply create high quality links – create links that will engage and offer value to your visitors. Not only will they be sharing this content and increasing the authority of that page, you will avoid low quality content penalties in the future. The same technique applies to the content that you put on your own website!

One way you can easily gain links to your website is like this one (EzineArticles)! It is very easy and if you are comfortable writing then you should have no problem writing a 500-word article on something that you are passionate about. There are many other directories and Web 2.0 websites that will allow you to contribute content.

Another fantastic way to create links and drive targeted traffic is to write guest posts for websites in your industry. Let's say you are in the technology niche – write about an emerging technology and include your link next to where you put your author name. Most webmasters will be happy to receive high quality content and will gladly keep your link in the article. Just be sure that all of the articles that you submit are 100% unique, hand written and provide value. When you write high quality insightful content, people will recognize you as an authority figure in the industry and will likely convert to a customer or repeat visitor.

So we have established that the best way to create a website that will rank well in search engines is to present high quality content that your users will share for you. It is much easier to have visitors create links for you than to try and write hundreds of articles yourself. Social signals (Twitter tweets, Facebook likes & shares and Pinterest pins) are becoming more important so make sure your work will get people excited enough to share with their friends. If you are able to do everything that I have mentioned then you will certainly start seeing a surge in traffic to your website and better rankings for those tough keywords you have been trying to rank for.
