PETALING JAYA: Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has been appointed as the Barisan Nasional director for the upcoming Mahkota by-election.
BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Onn Hafiz will be assisted by Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan. Party vice-president Khaled Nordin will be acting as “war room” chief, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“Kluang division chief Jais Sarday will serve as operations director while Zainal Mohamad will assist him,” he was quoted as saying.
When asked who would be contesting the Mahkota seat, the Umno president said he had received a list of potential candidates from Kluang Umno but had yet to finalise the candidate.
Yesterday, Zahid said BN had already chosen a candidate for the Mahkota by-election and would reveal the name after next week’s unity government secretariat meeting.
The Mahkota state seat was declared vacant after its assemblyman, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, died on Aug 2 while receiving treatment for internal bleeding.
The Election Commission has set Sept 14 as nomination day and Sept 28 as polling day.
