City Description:
Penang is a Malaysian island off the Malay Peninsula in the Strait of Malacca. In George Town, the capital of Penang state, foreign influences are evident in landmarks like colonial Fort Cornwallis, Chinese clan temple Khoo Kongsi and Indian-style Kapitan Keling Mosque. Other notable religious sites include the Chinese Goddess of Mercy Temple, the Buddhist Kek Lok Si Temple and Hindu Sri Mahamariamman Temple.State-run Muzium Negeri Pulau Pinang comprises a museum with historical exhibits and a modern art gallery featuring regional works. Visitors can take a funicular tram (or hike) up nearby Penang Hill for city views. Batu Ferringhi is a popular beach resort area on the north coast. More secluded beaches can be found in Taman Negara Pulau Pinang, a national park that also offers trails and bird-watching. The island is also known for its cuisine incorporating Chinese, Indian and Malay flavors, sold from street vendors and shophouses.

The peak travel seasons are Dec–Feb and Jun–Sep. The tropical climate is hot and humid year-round. The rainy/monsoon seasons are Apr–May and Oct–Nov. For major holidays such as Chinese New Year (George Town, Jan/Feb, dates vary) and Hari Raya Puasa (dates vary) and celebrating the end of Ramadan, many shops and restaurants close.
