Who said Malaysians don’t know how to mix a drink? In a recent triumph, three Malaysian bars have made their mark in Asia’s Top 50 Best Bars list for 2024 and we’re not even a little bit surprised. With a knack for creating unforgettable drinking experiences, our local watering holes have charmed their way to the top.
Leading the charge is Penrose, a sleek and almost hidden gem in Jalan Petaling. This bar has skyrocketed to the No.8 spot on the list, a jaw-dropping climb from its debut at No.50 last year. Penrose isn’t just turning heads, it’s also scooping up awards, including the Nikka Highest Climber Award 2024 and the coveted title of The Best Bar in Malaysia 2024. Not bad for a place that’s only been around since August 2022.
When you step into Penrose, you might just miss its steely entrance among the more flamboyant bars in the area – but once inside, it’s clear why this bar is a standout. Their cocktail game is strong, breaking down each drink into five elements: alcohol, taste, flavour, body, and dilution. From inventive highballs and sours to spirit-forward concoctions and even non-alcoholic options, Penrose’s menu is as diverse as it is delicious.
However, Penrose isn’t the only Malaysian bar basking in the limelight. Reka Bar, with its neon, lab-like ambiance, landed at No.41 as a new entry on the list. Located in Bukit Damansara, Reka Bar is known for its innovative drinks and was also a contender for the Bareksten Best Bar Design Award 2024.
Meanwhile, Bar Trigona continues to hold its ground, securing the No.36 spot. Nestled in the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Bar Trigona has been a mainstay on the list and previously nabbed the Siete Misterios Best Cocktail Menu Award 2022. Though it didn’t reclaim the title of The Best Bar in Malaysia this year, its presence remains strong.
