PETALING JAYA: A 32-year-old woman has died of rabies in Bintulu, Sarawak, in the sixth death linked to the disease this year.
Sarawak health director Dr Veronica Lugah said the woman died on Aug 31 while receiving treatment at the Bintulu Hospital, the Borneo Post reported.
She had suffered from a fever on Aug 24 and later developed other symptoms including aggression, hallucinations, and sensitivity to light.
Investigations revealed that the woman had not used protective gear when handling the carcasses of her three pet dogs that died after frothing at the mouth.
To date, Sarawak has recorded 81 rabies infections, of whom 74 have died since the outbreak was declared in 2017.
