When the month of Ramadan rolls around, there are a couple of things you’ll expect to see like ketupat, lemang and dates. But, it seems mandarin oranges are making a comeback too despite being “out of season”, much to netizens’ surprise!
Earlier this month, Bataras Sdn. Bhd. released their offerings for the Ramadan month, and something rather uncommon made the list. Apparently, they were selling mandarin oranges, repackaged for the Ramadan season. Needless to say, it became quite the object of curiosity for many netizens.
Photos were first circulated on Facebook, showing a local supermarket selling mandarin oranges on their shelves. Funnily enough, the oranges were packaged for the season, in green boxes and an overhead sign reading: “Yong Chun Lokam. Selamat Hari Raya. Aidil Fitri.”
As it turns out, the photos were taken from Bataras Hypermarket in Sabah. Their Facebook page too featured the fruit in their eye-catching green packaging, even offering five different sizes to choose from. Their post confirmed the oranges were being sold in conjunction with the month of Ramadan.
Netizens were quick to praise them, with several calling them “creative”. “(Selling mandarin oranges can be) shared by many,” one commented. “It’s awesome, creative and the packaging matches the (season’s) colour,” one noted. “They will definitely buy it. Malays like eating mandarin oranges too!”
Well, that’s definitely one way to make the most of an opportunity. On the other hand, we’ll get to enjoy eating mandarin oranges beyond just Chinese New Year. So, this looks like a win-win situation! What do you guys think?
