PETALING JAYA: Sarawak PKR’s decision on whether to contest the Jepak by-election may affect the federal government’s stability, says its deputy chief Abun Sui Anyit.

He said the party would consider all scenarios before deciding whether to contest in the Nov 4 by-election as the unity government’s stability must be maintained.

“In any event, if we manage to win the Jepak by-election, what can we do with only one seat?

“If we contest, a different scenario (could happen) and backfire on us. We must take that into consideration,” Abun told FMT when commenting on Jepak DAP chief Tonny Ung’s suggestion for Sarawak PKR to reconsider its decision to skip the by-election.

Abun said the final decision would be known on nomination day on Oct 21 but he respected Ung’s suggestion.

Ung’s rationale for the suggestion he made earlier today was based on the fact that Sarawak has no unity government and it is instead governed by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

He said with Sarawak Pakatan Harapan forming part of the state’s opposition, it was important that the coalition served as a check and balance on the GPS government.

Earlier this week, Abun said following a leadership council meeting, Sarawak PKR had decided not to field a candidate in Jepak, to maintain the federal government’s stability.

The Jepak by-election was called following the death of its assemblyman Talib Zulpilip on Sept 15.
