On Page Optimization

Search engine optimization is a vital part of doing business online. Without it, your website will just become another statistic, buried deep in Google’s search results. However, if you are following proper SEO protocol, your site will rise to the top and become easily discoverable by anyone searching for your keywords.

We’ll be looking at on page search engine optimization here, what you can do to make your web page look more attractive to the search engines.

Keyword Research

Keywords, or phrases, are what people type into the search engines when trying to find you. It’s in your best interests to optimize your web pages with the keywords that will lead your clients to you. There is a large variety of keyword tools on the market to help you find the most successful keywords in your niche, that is, the ones that will help you rank highest in the search engines. If you are working with an Internet marketing company, they will be able to do this for you.

Title and Meta Tags

The tags in your web page design are what show up in the search engine results, though not on the actual web page, quite a bit of significance is placed on them for SEO purposes. There are two main types of tags, the title and the meta tags.

Title tags, while prime real estate for keywords, shouldn’t be just a jumble of words and phrases. Remember that this is what will be showing up in the search results, so you also want it to be people friendly and interesting to those who are doing the search.

Meta tags consist of two parts, the keywords and the description. Keywords should include the relevant words for the web page and will help search engines find the right pages. The description is what will be displayed to actual searchers, so while it should have your keywords in it, the description also needs to make sense so people will want to click on your link.

Navigation Structure

How your website is laid out will have a big impact on both your human visitors and SEO. It should be easy to get around the website and just a click to jump back to the home page from any other page. By setting up an easy to follow navigation structure, search engines will be able to index all of your content and pages easier, meaning that you have a far better chance of making it into the top ranks of the search engines.

Anchor Text

When someone links to your web page or you do your own deep linking, the words used to form the link are called the anchor text. Your anchor text is very important, since this is one of the things that the search engines look at when determining how to rank your site.

Using keywords and phrases in your anchor text will help with the search engine optimization of your page. While you won’t always be able to control which words people use to link to you, you can certainly specify your preferred anchor text when submitting to blog directories or doing article marketing, etc.

ALT Text

Photos aren’t usually thought of as part of SEO, but they can be a huge help if you use ALT text. This is quite simply a piece of text that is included between ALT tags. It’s what pops up if you hover your mouse over an image and it allows search engine spiders to “see” the picture. Using your keywords in the ALT tags will boost SEO.

Content

No matter how much you optimize the rest of your web page, the content is really what counts. Effective search engine optimization includes strategic placement of keywords and keyword phrases throughout the content, without taking away from the meaning of it all. You want humans to enjoy the information you’re presenting, while still ranking well in the search engines and that can be done by writing quality content with your keywords appearing naturally within it.

Heading Tags

Heading tags are used to highlight certain parts of your web page text. They range in size from H1 to H6 and when used properly, can really boost your SEO rankings.

Words and phrases that are highlighted using heading tags will be noticed by search engine spiders and marked as being important. That’s why it’s a good idea to highlight words that will enhance the search results, usually your keywords.

Search engine optimization is very important if you want your site to be successful. By applying the on page SEO strategies given here, you’ll be giving your website a head start in getting to those top search results. It doesn’t end, here, however, there are plenty of off page strategies to implement, as well.
