KUCHING: DAP today said its Serian branch chief, Edward Andrew Luwak, left the party because the state leadership did not pick him as a candidate for the coming state election.
Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen said he had indicated to Luwak a few months ago the party would field a new candidate for one of the state seats in Serian.
“He seemed quite unhappy about it and that may be his reason for quitting the party,” Chong said at a press conference here today.
Luwak announced yesterday he had resigned from DAP with immediate effect.
“The decision to quit is stated in a letter to the party. I don’t need to go into detail but I just want to say I have lost confidence in the party’s leadership,” Luwak, 67, said.
However, he said he would not be retiring from politics although he had not decided yet on joining another party.
Luwak had contested unsuccessfully under DAP for the Serian parliamentary seat in the 2013 general election and for the Bukit Semuja seat in the 2016 state election.
He contested in Serian again in the 2018 general election but was defeated by Richard Riot of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).
“Since the party had channelled its resources to help him when he contested in the past three elections, he should reciprocate by helping a new and young member who wishes to offer his services,” Chong said.
He said the Sarawak DAP committee had decided to appoint Serian youth chief Brolin Nicholson to take over management of the branch until the party’s annual general meeting, expected to be held either in July and August.
Chong thanked Luwak for all his contributions to the party and the constituency.
