“The Fall Guy” looks like it was specifically written with Ryan Reynolds in mind but never underestimate Ryan Gosling’s abilities when it comes to doing action-comedies. The story follows Ryan’s character Colt Seavers, a stuntman who was assigned to find a missing Hollywood star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) for a movie, which is being directed by Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), Colt’s ex-girlfriend.
From the trailer itself, you can see that it’s definitely packed with a lot of action, amazing stunts (obviously), comedy and romance. We got the opportunity to watch a press screening of the upcoming movie. Here is a list of some highlights you can expect to see. Be warned that this may contain spoilers so proceed with caution!
1. Record-Breaking Stunts
It goes without saying that you can definitely expect some thrilling and glorious stunts in this movie but what you probably didn’t know is that there was a world record-breaking stunt that was performed at one point. It was actually shown in the movie’s first trailer where they managed to make a car roll 8 consecutive times in a single take! The longest cannon roll ever.
The previous record was held by “Casino Royale” in 2006 with 7 rolls. That’s something you definitely don’t want to miss.
2. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s Amazing Chemistry
The movie is described to be an action-comedy but of course, it wouldn’t be as interesting without a little romance between the two main characters. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s performance and chemistry were sizzling whenever these two appeared on screen together. In fact, we wanted more but what’s a good story without some tension and suspense, right?
Can you believe that this is actually their first time starring in a movie together?
3. A Love Letter To The Stunt Community
Everyone knows that stunt doubles are the unsung heroes for any action movie and before David Leitch became well-known for directing action movies, he actually started his career in Hollywood as a stuntman. The stunt team are the ones literally putting their lives at risk to get the perfect shots and make the scenes more believable. Thankfully, this movie honestly felt like it did them justice. Not only that, but during the end credits, the stunt team appeared right after the cast members.
4. A Lot Of Practical Effects
If you’re going to do an action movie that focuses on the job of a stuntman then it needs to be as real as possible. For the majority of the movie, you can expect a lot of live and practical effects with very little use of CGI or computer-generated visual effects. One of the only few times you would ever see CGI being used in “The Fall Guy” is during scenes where they show how the space movie which Emily’s character is directing would look like in post-production.
5. Loosely Based On The Source Material
“The Fall Guy” is actually an adaptation of the 1980s TV series of the same name. However, if you’re a fan of the original series then don’t expect the movie to be exactly like how it was shown back then. That’s not to say that you won’t experience a sense of nostalgia cause there are a few easter eggs, cliche scenes and even edits that would bring back some fond memories.
6. An Overall Fun Movie
In our opinion, this is one of those projects where you can feel that everyone on set had a lot of fun making. We had a lot of fun watching too! It’s a movie that’s not meant to be taken too seriously by the audience but still important enough for the studio to pay tribute to the stunt community and everyone working behind the scenes. It’s a great movie to watch on a relaxing weekend and a better insight into the art of filmmaking.
Obviously, there’s a lot more to be said but we’ll keep them to ourselves for now and let you experience the surprises yourself. “The Fall Guy” will hit cinemas nationwide starting on 2nd May so be sure to book your tickets!
