Breaking up with your partner after months of dating is already difficult enough, so we can’t imagine what it must feel like for a couple—especially those in the public eye—to go their separate ways after nearly 10 years together. While many high profile celebrity relationships sadly don’t tend to last, fans had high hopes for actress Jung Ho Yeon (정호연) and actor Lee Dong Hwi (이동휘), as they had been together for almost a decade.

Unfortunately, this relationship came to an end after it was announced that the couple had parted ways. What exactly went wrong? Here’s what their respective agencies had to say:

According to several Korean news outlets, the now-former couple’s agencies issued statements to address their relationship. The companies confirmed that Jung Ho Yeon and Lee Dong Hwi had broken up and had decided to remain good colleagues. However, the reason for the break-up was never specified. At the time of writing, the two celebrities have yet to personally address the breakup.

Prior to the separation, the two were famously known as one of the longest-standing couples in South Korea’s entertainment industry. Jung Ho Yeon, who began her career as a model in 2013, made her acting debut in the first season of the popular Netflix series “Squid Game” in 2021, while her now-ex, Lee Dong Hwi, debuted in 2012 with the film “Run to the South”. Not much is known about how they met, as the couple chose to keep their relationship private, but they did confirm they’ve been together since 2015.

Throughout their careers, Jung Ho Yeon and Lee Dong Hwi have been nothing but supportive of each other and have openly and affectionately expressed their love for one another during interviews. After going public in 2016, the former lovebirds were first met with a great deal of criticism due to their 9-year age gap. Now, fans have expressed their disbelief at the sudden breakup, as seen in the screenshots above.

It’s sad that things didn’t work out but we hope that there’s no bad blood between them and that they’ll remain good friends. Were you surprised by the news?
