Kicking up excitement on August 24th and dancing through until the 26th at the vibrant Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre KLCC, it’s time to celebrate the ‘Taiwan Expo 2023 in Malaysia‘! This dynamic event, masterminded by the Bureau of Foreign Trade and TAITRA, is the ultimate global stage where Taiwanese products shine. Picture this: 170 incredible Taiwanese companies have gathered under one electrifying roof, setting up 220 dazzling booths that showcase the very essence of Taiwanese innovation and creativity.

The opening ceremony was creatively themed around the ascent of Taiwan’s highest peak, Jade Mountain, in Northeast Asia and Malaysia’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu, in Southeast Asia, symbolizing the collaborative spirit between Taiwan and Malaysia. During the ceremony, TAITRA Chairman James Huang engaged in a heartfelt discussion about mountain climbing experiences with Malaysian avid hiker Sasa, currently residing in Taiwan. This discussion highlighted the strong and long-term commitment in Taiwan-Malaysia cooperation post-pandemic. Under the theme “Together, Reach New Heights,” the opening ceremony reached its climax, moving the entire audience deeply.

The Taiwan Expo, now in its 7th consecutive year in Malaysia, held its grand opening ceremony, which saw strong support from leaders of 20 Malaysian chambers of commerce and industry, including the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Malaysia (NCCIM), the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), and the SME Association of Malaysia (SMEAM).

James Huang emphasized that Malaysia is the only country where the Taiwan Expo has been held continuously for 7 years, highlighting the deep economic and trade relationship between Taiwan and Malaysia. This year’s Expo covers a wide range of industries, including Taiwan’s strengths in information and communication technology, Industry 4.0 solutions, green technology, carbon reduction solutions, smart healthcare products, and consumer-oriented products such as halal food, beauty and skincare, and fashion. It is believed that these offerings can provide Malaysian businesses with new ideas and applications.

Currently, there have been over 1,080 pre-scheduled one-on-one business matchmaking sessions, with an estimated business opportunity value of 48 million USD. These impressive figures underscore the robust partnership between Taiwan and Malaysia.

In her address, Representative Phoebe Yeh of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia stated the close economic, cultural, and healthcare cooperation between Taiwan and Malaysia. She noted that Taiwanese companies are renowned for their adaptability and utilization of advanced technologies, making them ideal partners for Malaysia’s development in Industry 4.0, smart healthcare, and the achievement of net-zero carbon emissions. In response to the global supply chain shift, she expressed the hope for continued deepening bilateral cooperation will undoubtedly create a win-win situation for both Taiwan and Malaysia.

5 Major Themes for Enhanced Diversity in Exchange

In alignment with Malaysia’s development policies and market demands, this year’s Taiwan Expo focuses on five major themes:

  1. Industry 4.0
  2. Smart Medical
  3. Halal
  4. Circular Economy
  5. Intelligent Lifestyle

These themes are complemented by product launches, industry forums, and business matchmaking events to facilitate multifaceted Taiwan-Malaysia exchanges.

In terms of the exhibition content, highlights from the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion include the Medical Grade PTZ Camera by AVer, designed to meet the demands of remote healthcare and precise medical applications. Also featured is the Industrial Gas Sensor by ICP DAS, which aids in monitoring carbon emissions in manufacturing or road transportation, showcasing the high quality of Made in Taiwan (MIT) products.

In the Net Zero Pavilion, efficient heat-blocking films suitable for electric buses and the world’s only smart AI-enabled water quality sensor are on display. To cater to the personalized smart lifestyle needs of Malaysian consumers, AcerPure emphasizes air purification through intelligent CO2 detection. Likewise, JPP’s electronic rearview system, equipped with a comprehensive detection system, represents an innovation within the Intelligent Lifestyle category. Additionally, the Taiwan Healthcare Pavilion, themed around “Medical Aesthetics and Healthcare,” brings together 22 of Taiwan’s most representative medical, aesthetic, and biotechnology healthcare companies. It caters to both inner and outer health and beauty. All of these are expected to generate significant interest.

As for business exchange activities, with a positive outlook on the digital trade landscape, TAITRA signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance cross-border e-commerce collaboration with the Malaysian e-commerce platform Youbeli. During the exhibition period, there were also multiple product launches, featuring a wide range of offerings such as remote control for smart home appliances, an intelligent safety stepper for the elderly, enterprise cloud services, and stylish pour-over coffee kits, providing visitors with a rich and immersive experience.

Recognizing the vast Muslim market in Malaysia, Taiwan Halal Center has made inroads into Malaysia’s 7-Eleven retail channels by hosting the Taiwan Halal Food Festival during the exhibition period. Apart from that, building on the success of last year, the 2nd Taiwanese Halal Food Cooking Contest, is scheduled for August 26th. Renowned Malaysian chefs, Chef Jo and Chef Riz, will serve as judges, while teams from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will compete across campuses for the champion of this year’s Taiwanese Halal Food Cooking Contest.

“Taipei Your Partner” Pavilion by Taipei City

Taipei City, Taiwan’s economic, political, and cultural center, will be setting up the “Taipei Your Partner” pavilion in this year’s event. 10 outstanding companies led by the Taipei City Government Economic Development Department will be showcasing products across three main axes of “Technological Taipei”, “Sustainable Taipei” and “Cultural Taipei”. The organizer is hopeful that the event will generate new business opportunities and help Taipei enterprises break into the Malaysian market.

Amongst the many interesting products on display include the nano-copper infused textile from IN4 Technology, and natural woven socks and sleeves from Danken Enterprise. The products are specially selected to reflect the diversity of Taipei’s industry and the city’s business friendly image.
