Former Selangor Umno treasurer Tengku Zafrul Aziz wants the state chapter to outline a ‘win-win’ strategy to cooperate with its partners in the Selangor government.
PETALING JAYA: Former Selangor Umno treasurer Tengku Zafrul Aziz has slammed the state chapter for its lukewarm efforts to revive itself following its poor performance in last year’s state election.
Tengku Zafrul said the outcome of last August’s state polls, when Selangor Umno won just two of the 12 seats it contested, should have served as an “eye-opener”.
“It has been eight months since the state election, but there’s still nothing. In-depth post-mortem? None. A new strategy to win the hearts of the people? None,” said the investment, trade and industry minister.
“So, if my view on the urgent need to restore Selangor Umno’s glory is not accepted, I think it’s better that I focus on assisting the party at the central and division level.”
After last August’s state election, Tengku Zafrul said Selangor Umno’s poor showing must be considered a “final warning” to the party.
He also insisted that Selangor Umno leaders must accept the reality that the party struggled in areas with more Malay voters, adding that the success of Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan in forming the Selangor government should not distract from BN’s poor showing at the polls.
In today’s statement, he suggested that Selangor Umno outline a “win-win” strategy to cooperate with its partners in the state government.
Stating that there is a need to cultivate “new political cultures” based on intellectual discourses focused on solutions and policies, he also said the state chapter should stop focusing on “nonsensical issues”.
“If we fail to change the culture, no matter how comprehensive our vision, we will remain ineffective,” he said.
Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as Selangor Umno treasurer on Monday after citing an inability to contribute to improving the state chapter.
He said that while his main goal after being appointed to the post was to contribute to Umno’s resurgence in Selangor, the state chapter was unable to effectively carry out initiatives planned at the national level.
The former finance minister, who was appointed the Selangor Umno treasurer last April, said he would continue to head the Kota Raja Umno branch and serve as a member of the Umno Supreme Council.
Selangor Umno committee member Jamal Yunos and the state’s Umno Youth chief, Imran Tamrin, said the state chapter had organised numerous programmes under the leadership of Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, including efforts to regain its supporters.
