Some of you may remember that last year, the Tesla Model Y was given an update that brought with it some changes lifted from the facelifted Model 3, codenamed Project Highland. In China, this included a new ambient lighting system integrated in the dashboard decor, replete with customisable colours.
Now, customers who bought earlier versions of the Model Y (produced between January 24, 2022 and October 1, 2023, which was when the update was introduced) are able to purchase the system as an accessory right from Tesla itself. That means no more dealing with dodgy wiring and installation using aftermarket kits.
The OEM version is quite involved. Aside from the light strips themselves, the kit also switches the original wood decor for the fabric covering also seen in the latest Model 3. Just like on the updated Model Y, you can change the colour of the lighting through the big centre touchscreen.
Here’s the bad news – unfortunately, as per the updated Model Y itself, you can only purchase the kit if you’re in China. And given that the Middle Kingdom is a left-hand-drive nation, don’t hold your breath for it ever appearing in Malaysia. If you’re still curious, the kit costs 1,599 yuan (RM980); helpfully, this figure includes the installation cost at any authorised Tesla service centre in the country.
If you do still want a Tesla Model Y with ambient lighting in Malaysia, you’re better off holding out for the facelifted model, codenamed Project Juniper. That car, which will also feature a revised design and some more bits from the Model 3, has recently been sighted undergoing testing several times and should go on sale within the first few months of 2025.
