Search engine optimization (SE0) of your website is only one, but important element of an effective Internet marketing campaign. The key importance of SEO to an Internet marketer is that ranking high or well in the search engine (SE) results for keyword searches is that SEO drives traffic to your website. And, without traffic of course nothing happens on your site.

The traffic you want as an online marketer is targeted traffic. You want people visiting your website because they have an interest in your website content.

The first and foremost thing you need to understand about search engines such as Google and Yahoo is that they make their money from marketers that advertise through their respective search engine advertising tools, such as Pay Per Click (the advertiser pays when an Internet surfer clicks the ad text or image to go to the ad Web landing page) and AdSense advertising where a website publisher receives money from advertisers that place ads on their Web pages when a surfer clicks on the ad to go to the ad Web landing page.

The more that Internet surfers search for information or Web pages on the Internet the more customers SEs can deliver to their advertisers. By all accounts it is common knowledge that people primarily use the Internet to find, search for information. Roughly 70% of all Internet activity is to find information, or it is information related. Just reflect on your own Internet usage for a moment, and arrive at this conclusion about your Internet behavior.

This is the information age, and the Internet is driving it. On the Internet information is king. How many times do people go on the Internet to buy products or services? What percentage of the time is spent on the Internet buying products or services? Maybe it's 15%, 20%, but the fact is that buying activity represents a lesser amount of Internet activity. So, the bottom line for the search engines is that the more you come back to their respective websites to search for information the more money they make from their ad customers.

To rank highly in search engine results the search engines want to see that you are primarily providing relevant (people find it important) and quality information on your website pages. The content on your website is what the search engines are most interested in because it is content that brings people back to the search engines and to your website for advertising related activity.

SEO can be sum-ed up with the formula: SEO = On-page criteria + Off-page criteria. The on-page criteria basic formula is: On-page Criteria = Keywords + Content + Links. The off-page criteria that the search engines use to rank Web pages are the human behaviors that people perform when they visit your Web pages such as the amount of time you spend on a page, how often you visit the page, do you click links on the page, etc. No one really knows all the on-page and off-page criteria that the search engines use to rank Web pages but the top executives at the search engines.

Keywords are the words people type into search engine textbox search fields to find information such as SEO, search engine optimization, SEO consultant, etc. Your keywords that form the subject matter of your Web pages should be matched to the words seekers use to find the relevant content on your Web pages.

Content is the information on your Web pages. It should be relevant and quality information. The Web page should be readable and understandable, and interesting.

Links are the images or text that a person clicks on to go to another Web page either on your website or another website. Links connecting Web pages within your website or to other websites should work of course. Also, the inbound links that other web publishers put on their Web pages to link to pages in your website are very important to the search engines because they are an indicator of how relevant other websites find your website.

Outbound links from your Web pages to other website pages are important because this shows that you are providing value (more information) to your website visitors. Inbound links are kind of a vote of confidence from other websites that your website is relevant and important, which means that people will visit your website more.

In conclusion, relevancy and quality of content is the foundation to SEO. Connectivity, linking is extremely important.
