The Transition From Ecommerce to Mcommerce

Smartphones and tablets are becoming smarter, giving users increased capabilities and greater reach to accomplish tasks and communicate. These technologies are no longer just luxuries, but essential tools to improving business performance and giving customers greater convenience and confidence in products and services.

The uses for smartphones are growing and improving at an almost dizzying rate. From Internet browsing, online banking, social networking, research, shopping and more, mobile apps are playing a big role in engaging people with services and each other.

People are spending more time on their mobile devices as the number of mobile applications continues to grow. Among the mobile applications used regularly by people, the Nielson study shows a 12% growth in the use of commerce & shopping applications. According to mobileinsurance.com, on average smart phone owners spend 90 minutes a day on their phone.

Mcommerce is rapidly overtaking ecommerce. Mcommerce is being utilized more and more, and will soon pass ecommerce in popularity. By 2018, mobile sales are expected to grow to $626 billion globally, and $31 billion in the US alone by 2016.

More than a third of smart phone users use their devices for shopping right now. Thirty-six percent use them to search for product information; 27 percent use them to find information about stores; and 25 percent use them to read reviews.

Today, every business utilizes ecommerce to some extent, whether it’s accepting orders online or marketing to users through email and social networking – ecommerce makes it faster and easier to reach consumers. Mcommerce brings that convenience to the next level. While people don’t always have their computers with them, they always have their mobile devices on hand. Promotional alerts and tracking notifications can be sent directly to the customer’s pocket, and the customer has immediate access to messages and the ability to respond from the same device.

Mobile commerce offers increased convenience for shoppers and “etailers”. Shoppers can make purchases from any location at any time. They can receive promotions, discounts and incentives based on their location, and their purchases are delivered promptly and directly to their address. Shipments can be tracked in real time and customer service representatives can be reached right away.

By the same token, etailers are able target a wider audience without geographical limitations. They can send notifications to customers about new promotions, offers and events, and use new metrics to evaluate customer satisfaction and needs. Etailers can also manage orders, billing and shipping efficiently from a single, multi-use administration panel that can automatically generate reports to help keep track of sales information.

According to the latest ComScore data report, 60 percent of online shopping is accounted for by mobile devices. That number is only going to increase, so businesses should take complete advantage of the mobile wave to give themselves the enhanced capabilities and increased scope they need. Due to mcommerce’s easy to use features and accessibility, customers prefer using mobile apps for shopping and are becoming more and more accustomed to it.

People between the ages of 18 and 30 are the most frequent users of phones to access the Internet and make purchases. This demographic is technologically savvy technology and are able to make quick judgments about an application. They’re vocal about what they like and they expect speed and convenience in their shopping experience. When a website is not mobile friendly, 61 percent of mobile users have said they would turn away for another option.

The increased convenience mcommerce gives consumers amplifies the profitability of businesses who utilize this emerging sales method. When you have your own sales app that customers can access by phone, you open your business up to a 24/7 stream of customers who have the freedom to make purchases from any location. Mcommerce is the next generation of consumer experience: faster, easier and more connected.
