In the ’90s, Dave Wang (王傑) was a Hong Kong singer whose popularity rivalled Hong Kong’s biggest acts, even the ‘Four Heavenly Kings’ – but his success slowed down later in the decade. Years later, he shocked the entertainment world by revealing he lost his voice after being poisoned.
In the 2017 interview where he made the shocking revelation, the veteran singer claimed that someone had laced his drink with poison, which damaged his vocal cords. He said the incident ruined his voice and appearance, leaving him depressed. Dave also hinted at the person who poisoned him but did not reveal the perpetrator’s identity.
After the interview was released, many people speculated that the one who poisoned the singer was Hong Kong actor Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒), who was Dave’s junior at Emperor Entertainment Group at the time of the supposed incident. The public also speculated that there was a feud between the two. However, as the rumour resurfaced years later, a veteran entertainment reporter shared his view on the story, claiming that the whole incident had never happened and Dave was never poisoned in the first place.
The reporter, Uncle Zhu (朱叔) rubbished the allegations that Nicholas plotted the incident because he was on bad terms with the senior, saying that Nicholas didn’t have the guts to cause harm to Dave. The reporter also revealed that Dave was to blame for losing his voice, saying that the vocalist was a heavy drinker and smoker. In addition to that, he had also stopped practising his singing because he was not performing as often, which further deteriorated his voice.
Uncle Zhu also shared that Dave was already on bad terms with his management, which placed him in “cold storage”, causing his popularity to tank. All that led the reporter to believe that Dave used being poisoned as an excuse to cover up his own doing. However, well-known paparazzi Zhuo Wei (卓伟) also chimed in on the issue, seemingly hinting that the poisoning incident did happen, but Nicholas was not the one behind it.
While we may never know the truth, at least we can believe that Nicholas Tse never had a part in this.
