PETALING JAYA: Umno has given Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s government a lifeline by deciding tonight not to work with PKR and DAP in the formation of a new government.
Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Umno Supreme Council had agreed that its MPs should continue to support the Perikatan Nasional coalition government.
The party also called for a National Reconciliation Initiative or National Peace Agenda to be implemented immediately by mobilising the participation of all political parties under the Perikatan Nasional government as well as opposition parties.
In a statement after the meeting ended around 12.15 am at Putra World Trade Centre, he said the meeting also proposed that the government adopt a more inclusive approach beyond ideological differences between parties in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the economy.
The council also agreed to strengthen the Muafakat Nasional alliance, in which Umno is a partner with PAS and PPBM, led by Muhyiddin.
The Supreme Council meeting was attended by a few Umno Supreme Council members such as Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Zahidi Zainul Abidin, Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Shahidan Kassim, Puad Zarkashi, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, Rosnah Rashid Shirlin, Abdul Rahman Dahlan, and Ab Rauf Yusoh.
The meeting began about 8pm after a meeting of Barisan Nasional leaders and MPs earlier this afternoon to discuss their stand on whether Muhyiddin Yassin should resign as prime minister.
