Valentine’s, Schmalentines: The Benefits Of Being Single In Your 20s

0

And just like that, it’s almost Valentine’s Day. The (allegedly) most dreaded day of the year for us single peeps. Look, as much as we can be completely cynical about Valentine’s Day, being single isn’t really that bad, especially when you’re in your 20s. Don’t get us wrong – we think it’s great to be in a relationship. We’re just saying that if you’re single, don’t be depressed or cynical about it; instead, embrace it.

Being single in your 20s comes with so many benefits, believe it or not. While being single comes with, well… being alone, it can be equally as fantastic. Don’t succumb to the notion that being alone is the end of the world. Once you understand how being alone can be liberating, being single in your 20s will not affect you at all. Being alone is not the same as being lonely, and if you understand the distinction, single life isn’t that awful.

If that doesn’t persuade you, below are five reasons why being single in your 20’s is super beneficial.

1. You’re As Free As A Bird

There’s no denying that living the single life means you’re basically unchained. You can do whatever you want, live however you want, without any judgement. Sometimes, there are things that we want to do that being in a relationship would not allow for. And when you’re in your 20s, there are so many things that you want to discover! Take your time and don’t simply jump into a relationship just because your peers are. Being single is so much more liberating than what society deems it to be.

2. You Get To Discover Who You Are

When you’re in your 20s, you’re gearing up to be an adult – and it’s also the time when you should get to know more about yourself. Whether it’s discovering a new hobby or moving forward with your career, you don’t want your partner to get in the way of that. It’s not to say that a partner can’t be supportive of that – it’s just that the process of getting to know yourself means focusing more on yourself; and you don’t want other people judging or commenting on your choices.

3. You Know Your Standards As You Get Older

Hard as it may be to believe, as you grow older, your standards in a partner begin to change as well. It’s as the old saying goes: “The older you are, the wiser you get”. Of course, we all make mistakes, regardless of age and that includes in choosing our partner. But, as you age in your 20s, you basically know what you want in your partner and you won’t settle for less. There’s no reason for you to stick around when someone already shows red flags.

4. You’ll Spend Less

There’s no denying that “no relationship = less money spent”. It’s basic science at this point. When you’re in a relationship, you want to impress your partner, which means spending lavishly on them. However, unless you’re already born rich, spending lavishly in your 20s only indicates that you don’t know how to manage your money well. Your 20s is the perfect time to learn how to save and manage your finances. However, being in a relationship would hinder that, so it’s better to spend time with your piggy bank than a partner.

5. Your Family And Friends Come First

When you’re not in a relationship, you have more time to spend with your family and friends. The connection you form with people close to you is far more significant than any other, and being single may offer you more time to strengthen your friendships and improve your relationship with your family. Let’s be honest: being with someone who truly knows you for who you are is far superior to being with someone who depends on action and keeps a close eye on you.

All in all, don’t feel bummed out that you’re single amongst your peers who are in relationships. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Embrace the single life and you’ll see how thrilling it is.
