When you dine in at a restaurant, you’ll probably expect to see many things – but a monitor lizard is unlikely to be on the list. Unfortunately for the customers of a Johor Bahru restaurant, lizards were exactly what they encountered when dining there one unsuspecting afternoon.
Recently, a Facebook post went viral, showing an incident that happened at Uncle Fook Chili Hakka Mee (Uncle Fook辣椒面酿豆腐) restaurant in Johor Bahru. According to the post by store owner Bee Siok Liau, a pair of monitor lizards broke into the restaurant in broad daylight, frightening the many customers dining at the time. In the CCTV footage included in the post, the two monitor lizards ran into the restaurant as one of them chased the other.
The appearance of the two lizards caused a commotion in the restaurant, even resulting in one female diner falling out of her chair in shock. The two lizards continued running around the premises, terrorising the other customers. Some were so frightened, they climbed on the chairs and tables to avoid contact with the lizards. A staff member had tried to chase the lizards out of the store but to no avail. However, local news outlet China Press reported that staff did manage to capture the monitor lizards and release them without any harm.
While having two wild animals cause chaos in your store might not be ideal, the restaurant doesn’t seem too disgruntled by the incident. The owner even jokingly dubbed the scene a “love chase” between the monitor lizard “couple” and said it reminded her of a romantic movie where the hero would chase after the heroine. She also added that the incident could be a sign of good fortune as some people believe that animals entering a home or a store can bring good luck to the place. Many netizens have also reacted to the video, expressing excitement for the restaurant’s unexpected “luck”.
Unfortunately, the customers were left shocked by the lizard “couple” during their meal – but thankfully, no one got seriously injured from the incident. As for the restaurant, it’s good they’re seeing this from a positive perspective.
