Malaysian-born singer Namewee (黃明志) has always surprised fans with his unconventional music videos and shocking collaborations. After teasing a collaboration with the one and only Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong (黃秋生), Namewee finally released the highly anticipated track “ZhaFit (揸Fit)” and the accompanying music video.
Over the past few days, Namewee has shared numerous teasers for the new song titled “ZhaFit”, which loosely translates as “to hold” or “to control”. As shown in his social postings, Namewee and Anthony’s latest track is a homage to the “Young and Dangerous (古惑仔電影系列)” film series and an iconic character from the Hong Kong actor’s decades-long career – the infamous triad leader Tai Fei (大飛哥).
Sure enough, the song and music video had lots of references to the movies and the Tai Fei character. Anthony even reprised his role as the formidable triad leader, surprising viewers with how easily he embodies the character over 25 years after his introduction to the world. As for the lyrics, Namewee revealed that he worked with Hong Kong lyricist Gene Lau (劉卓輝), who also wrote the original theme song to the first “Young and Dangerous” movie.
Besides honouring the Tai Fei character and the cult favourite film series, Namewee also revealed that the song is a tribute to the golden age of Hong Kong cinema. According to the singer, his role as a director in the music video symbolises the difficulties faced by directors who want to make a name for themselves in today’s film industry.
The music video, filmed at Yizhong Street in Taichung City, Taiwan, also featured some notable Taiwanese content creators who replicated scenes from the “Young and Dangerous” films, including the climactic gang fight. Namewee admitted that he was scared to film this scene for the music video because he was afraid of possibly getting beaten up while he stood amidst the crowd.
“ZhaFit” isn’t the first partnership between Namewee and Anthony for a song because the two previously worked together on the 2020 track “China Reggaeton (中國痛)”. As for the reaction to this new song, many fans have given the thumbs up – showing how well-received it is.
