go to kampung baru to have malaysians food
You should ask people for "Malay Food" and not Malaysian food. Malay Food are the cuisine of the indigenous people(Malays) of Malaysia and Singapore. Ask for authentic Malay Food.
The standard pricing is rice + 1 protein + 1 vege = MYR10. Each additional protein protein costs around MYR 6-8.
If I feel the price is fair, I don't complain. If I feel like I was overpaying, I tell them. I also tell them I won't go there again. Usually, I ghost people.
I think RM25 is reasonable. You should ask how they charged if you think the price is too high.
So you avoid anything with Soy or Sugar…hahaha
How convenient…avoiding those ingredients when everything in Asian or SEA cuisine have those in it.
Why don't you just admit..you only have enough to buy Ramen.
You westerners like wild places, why come to Malaysia? You should go to thailand or indonesia. You can go wild there. Malaysia is not overated but more like underated.😅
yo Ben. I agree with you. Everybody wants to pay a fair price. My strategies for best pricing. Ask first. Observe first for 5-10 mins. Ask local to order/pay for you and give them small tip for helping you. Or tell them. I want a $12 ringit plate and want to give you $1 ringit tip upfront so they treat you good
bro… u shd ask for malay food not malaysian food… Dilla restaurant .. the one u frequent.. serve malay food.. malaysian is our nationality… malaysia consists of many races.. the main 3 races are malay… chinese n indian…. other races like punjabi.. eurasian.. peranakan chinese.. orang asli (indigenous people).. org iban.. org kadazan… org murut.. org penan… org kenyah etc…
jln alor majorities of restaurants run by malaysian chinese… in brickfields (little india).. run by malaysian indian (tamil indians.. frm south india.. food spicier than northern india..) u shd try tosai (dosay) made frm rice flour serve with dhal curry n chutney.. 😅
malaysia is a muslim country.. so honestly the nightlife not as vibrant like in thailand.. most girls working at clubs are foreign girls… if u visit southern thailand.. women there wear hijabs (head cover) too.. they speak malay too (kelantanese dialect)…
rm33 sounds reasonable.. u took beef curry.. two types of chicken dishes.. fish curry n vege… plus rice… but if previously u took the same dishes n the price was cheaper.. then i think the seller was trying to pull a fast one… i would ignore if the price varies a bit but if it’s huge eg frm rm13 to rm33 with the same types of dishes.. then i’d approach the seller too… let me roughly count.. chicken rendang – rm7… chili chicken rm7… beef curry rm7…. fish rm7… vege rm3… rice rm2… hmmmm the total is rm33… i guess maybe the previous visit someone gave u discounted price or maybe the price was cheaper than what i’ve guessed… gd to ask the seller how much was the price individually… 🤔
You clearly came at the wrong time, it’s much busier and more vendors during nightime at Jalan Alor, but it is very touristy
Here’s some food place you might like :
– kampong bharu
– banglo 289
– jalan bellamy
– damascus bukit bintang
– sambal hijau restaurant
44:00 that homeless guy stole another homeless guy's house
no not dramatic at all. price should be more stable/same esp if u going there regularly….he knew he was wrong hence the laughig/chuckling
hahaa caught that guy sking …niceeee
ya man get out of these common looking city areas and malls and show us some sights on your walk and talks!
Beef + Chicken + Chicken + Fish + Vege + Rice
= 7+6+6+7+3+4
= 33
You ate a lot of dishes.
Malay – ethnic group (others : Chinese, Indian etc)
Malaysian – People of Malaysia
Malaysian food – malay food, chinese food, indian food
Malay food – cuisine from malay people
the problem is jalan alor is a food street..not a night market..u just got the wrong expectation..i think the price discrepancy most prob caused by the fish..fish prices fluctuate and not controlled like chicken
In Malaysia the price is controlled by the government. They are not allowed to raise the price as they like. You can tell them that you will report them to the authorities. Even you are not allowed to give tips. Every product should have a price tag. Without the price tag action can be taken.
pricing depends on how many dishes you took.. so.. anyway, hope you make it all the way north. Each city has a different vibe. 🙂
Unfortunately Ben they see dollars when a foreigner comes into there restaurant, we all know that 😢I have been going to South East Asia for many years but it doesn’t bother me for a few extra dollars because I’m a 2 week millionaire but in your case I understand because your situation is different you need to watch every dollar , it is the principle also but it is what it is , keep up with the amazing content and stay safe mate
Pakistan is a no-no tho lol
The place u go eat is called nasi campur stall, its like a buffet, take what u want eat but pay what u take
80% of the food vendors in Jalan Alor are Chinese because it is part of China Town. If you want to enjoy traditional Malay food you should go to Kampung Bharu where there is a popular Nasi Lemak restaurant called Wanjo. You can also enjoy Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Dagang which are popular from the east coast. The food traders there are 100% Malay and you will not find any Chinese and Indian traders except Malays with Indonesian workers and some Arab traders from Syria. While to enjoy 100% Indian food at Brickfield or Indian Street. In the 80s, Jalan Alor was famous as a cheap prostitution center but it was suppressed by the government and its role was changed.
Jalan Alor 'night' market/ food place… the clue is in the name.
As a guide, average price of RM7 is good reference to whether you are being ripped off or not. Say, if you are having one piece of each chicken, fish and meat… it'd be RM7 x 3 =RM21, chicken being the lowest price. But then again, it is best to ask the prices before you even agree on your selection. Don't let yourself be easily cheated because anywhere in the world, if you made yourself vulnerable they would ride on you.
Normally I like your videos and your reasoned comments but this one……
The title is clearly a nonsense as you visited a Night Market during the day and complain that it is 'Overrated'. Hmm. Maybe your withdrawal symptoms are affecting your gray matter…..
I'll tell you an ideal Malaysian-Chinese Dish for you and its my favourite – Pan Mee. It has no soya or sugar not even the chilli that comes with it but you have to take it the soup not the dry form because that one has soya sauce in it.
bro, as a local I can tell you for what you had – $33 is reasonable. I go to more establshed mamak shops like Pelita or Kayu, I take rice with some veg and mutton already costs me $35.
Also depends on the kind if dishes because some ingredients cost more than others. I saw whats on your plate and j think its justified. Fish are more expensive than chicken
🇲🇾🤝✌️🤲😃👍
You should check out koh lanta as well. I love it.
Love your channel, but when you order without asking price first, you're a mark. You've been traveling for awhile and you're acting like a newbie bro. You're setting yourself up to be victimized.
It's good to stay slightly longer in Malaysia. There's a lot of thing to see. Like the City of Ipoh where I grew up there. Like Penang best for food. Langkawi Kedah for the beach. Name it. Hopefully to meet you since the Eid Mubarak is just around the corner.
Take a 2 hour bus to malacca sentral…..food there is proper malay…..and nyonya food….look for malay stingray asam pedas at the mixed rice place in melaka town
Dude went to a "Night market" in the daytime and complained about it being dead? lmao
You're an interesting character, maybe that's why I like your videos.
Literally the worst time of day to go to Jalan Alor LOL. Do some research in advance, my dude. But yes, it is overrated.
I get a feeling you don't get the nuances of what the terms "Malay", "Malaysian", "Chinese" really mean? I've seen this in a couple of videos already. Suggestion – make friends with locals, get them to show you the ropes.
No that is not tourist price. It's simple maths man, you take more, you pay more. You take less, you pay less. RM33 for 1-2 scoops of meat, 2 pcs chicken, 1 pc fish and a pile of spinach and rice is super cheap!! Even us locals don't usually eat that much. And the audacity to ask for cheaper price, the seller was more than gracious to charge you RM25 and you still complain. Pfftttt. smh.
Yes, sometimes sellers take advantage of tourists, and the majority of them are not locals, which is why we do not like to eat at their stalls.
Supporting my eBestie. 😏
As a malaysian i never go there…..
I am a malaysian. What you paid was reasonable. You had two pieces of chicken, beef, fish and vege. That was quite cheap really.

Jalan Alor is overrated. You should check out the night market at Kuala Lumpur or Setia Alam.
You are almost broke, hungry and almost homeless in a foreign land……..so count yourself lucky being in Malaysia where everybody shows you kindness……yet you still go round bashing everything and everybody around you?
When I was in LA I didn’t have the money to wing it at The Beverly Wilshire Hotell, but I was comfortable enough in the YMCA.
I ate well, never starved, never ran out of friends. and were offered jobs even when I didn’t want it.
