Why Not Having a Marketing Strategy Is Like Driving With Your Eyes Closed

0

When it comes to business, one thing that has been a mainstay for successful companies is having a great marketing strategy. In fact, any business that is serious about actually staying in business would not go one day without moving forward with an effective marketing strategy as it is the foundation for how a business remains relevant.

Do you sometimes think back to the ridiculous things you and your friends would do just for laugh? Maybe one of the most boneheaded ways you could have a quick laugh was to put your hands over your buddy’s eyes while he was driving. The sheer idea of him freaking out was enough to make everyone in the car lose it, though in retrospect, what were you thinking?

Conducting business without a marketing strategy is a lot like driving with your eyes closed. It doesn’t make any sense, but for some reason, there is a large contingent of businesses out there who are doing just that. Marketing experts lend this gap to business owners contending that the small size of their operation doesn’t make it worth it. Furthermore, many of these same owners also are quick to point out either they can get the word out well-enough or that a lower-level employee can do wonders for free through social media.

It seems that the proverbial “hands-over-the-eyes-while-driving” mentality still remains. For those businesses that still feel that a marketing strategy seems unnecessary, here are few things to understand:

No Direction – Marketing strategies are about setting goals for a business and figuring out how to achieve them. It’s about determining an identity. How will you know you’re getting where you want to go if you don’t know where you wanted to go in the first place?

No Focus – Without direction, you can’t have focus. You’re moving in too many directions and missing key pieces of information that allow you to make changes & keep you business on the right track.

Wasting A Lot of Money – When you’re out of high school & don’t have focus and direction, you’re finding yourself. When you’re in business, you’re throwing away time & money, your two most precious assets.

No Good End in Sight – Many businesses realize too late that their lack of marketing strategy has hit them where it hurts the most – their bank account. In order to stop the bleeding, business owners do everything they should have been doing from the beginning, hoping that their impassioned attempt to save their business will buy them one more day. Sometimes it works, but more often than not, the reality is that being successful in business has nothing to do with luck.

A marketing strategy isn’t some “Silicon Valley” wordplay intent on milking a business for all its worth. Advertising and marketing have been a part of how businesses succeed since the dawn of time. You can do your best to rely on getting information about your business by word of mouth, but you’re risking the survival of your business & if you have employees, their livelihood along with your own.
