PETALING JAYA: The government is confident that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will act fairly and professionally in investigating a case involving former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said this confidence stems from his own trial on 47 criminal charges, in which he was given a conditional discharge. The charges involved alleged corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.
“Personally, I have been in a similar situation and when my case was brought to court, despite various accusations, justice was ultimately upheld.
“I hope the same will happen in court (for Ismail’s case),” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed on Monday that Ismail was a key suspect in its ongoing investigation into four senior officers linked to him.
Azam had previously said the case was being investigated for soliciting and accepting bribes, as well as money laundering.
On March 5, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged the public against condemning his predecessor. He said due process must be observed and the authorities must be given space to conduct their probe professionally.
In 2023, the High Court granted Zahid a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in the Yayasan Akalbudi case. Zahid had been accused of embezzling millions of ringgit and accepting bribes for various projects during his tenure as the home minister between 2013 and 2018.
