Zii Jia-Tze Yong to face off in Australian Open quarters

KUALA LUMPUR: Men’s singles shuttlers Lee Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong played well to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open today.

They will play each other for a slot in the semifinals in a battle between two of the country’s top players right now.

Earlier in today’s second round, Zii Jia, who is currently ranked 17th in the world, brushed aside Mithun Manjunath of India 21-13, 12-21, 21-19 at the Quaycentre in Sydney.

Tze Yong  upset Indonesian world No 5 Jonatan Christie 22-20, 21-15 to advance to the last eight tomorrow.

Zii Jia and Tze Yong, who is ranked 21st in the world, have never faced each other at any international tournament before.

Meanwhile, national men’s doubles pair of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi lost to Taiwan’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin 21-18, 17-21, 19-21.

Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei also suffered defeat after going down 16-21, 21-17, 19-21 to the Indonesian pair of Renov Revaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari.
