PETALING JAYA: A total of 14 tonnes of food supplies have been sent to flood-affected residents in Tatau, about 50km from Bintulu, according to Sarawak minister John Sikie Tayai.

Deliveries to the Penyarai and Nanga Tau areas included rice, canned sardines, and noodles for more than 1,000 families, Bernama reported. Some of the supplies were sent by helicopter, said Tayai, who is assemblyman for Kakus.

He said roads in rural areas have been cut off due to the floods.

More than 700 people were taking shelter at a relief centre in Tatau, while Bintulu remains the worst-affected in Sarawak with more than 5,000 evacuated.

They were among nearly 11,000 flood victims evacuated throughout the state. Other divisions affected were Serian, Samarahan, Sibu, Miri and Mukah.

The Sarawak disaster management committee said 14 evacuation centres have been closed as the floodwaters receded.

However, more rain has been forecast from Feb 4-5 in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, and Mukah.

In Sabah, the number of evacuees dropped to 675 this evening, and only Lahad Datu and Tongod remain affected.
