You’ve read about the MG S5 EV, and saw the electric SUV at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2025, where MG Motor Malaysia revealed the EV’s variants and launch package, but not the actual price. Now, here’s the final piece of the jigsaw from the S5’s official launch.

The electric SUV rival to the Proton eMas 7 and BYD Atto 3 is priced from RM116,548 for the base Com 49 kWh, rising to RM126,548 for the Com Long Range with a 62 kWh battery. The range-topping Lux Long Range with the same 62 kWh battery is yours for RM136,548. All figures are on-the-road without insurance.

The S5 EV’s previously reported launch package had a RM5,000 discount and a complimentary 7kW wallbox for home charging. At today’s launch, MG announced a boosted cash rebate of RM6,000 with the free wallbox for the first 500 buyers.

This means that the price for early birds is RM110,548 for the Com 49 kWh, RM120,548 for the Com 62 kWh and RM130,548 for the Lux 62 kWh – RM10k increments, basically. For quick reference, the Proton eMas 7 is priced from RM109,800 to RM123,800, while the BYD Atto 3 Ultra retails for RM123,800 (ongoing promo brings it down to RM118,800). Competitive!

To recap, the base Com offers a choice of 49 kWh or 62 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, good for WLTP rated range of 340 km and 430 km respectively. The Lux is exclusively paired to the 62 kWh battery. All have a rear motor with 170 PS and 250 Nm of torque – MG stresses that the S5 is the only rear-wheel-drive EV in its class. Rear multi-link suspension, if you must know.

As for charging, max rates are 7 kW AC and 120 kW DC, with the Lux taking the latter to 150 kW, a rate that enables 10-80% SoC top ups in 26 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is available to power your appliances. There are three levels of ‘KERS’, MG’s name for regen, and single-pedal mode.

Standard kit include LED headlamps with ‘Racing Flag’ themed DRLs, a rear LED light bar that grows ‘wings’ at the sides, 17-inch alloys, electronic parking brake with auto hold, single-zone automatic air con with rear vents, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with voice command, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, reverse camera and MG’s iSmart app connectivity.

The Com Long Range adds on leather-fabric seats with perforated MG logos (full fabric on the Com) and a six-way powered driver’s seat with manual lumbar.

Go for the Lux and you’ll get 18-inch alloys, power folding wing mirrors, panoramic sunroof, leather steering wheel, wireless phone charging pad, rear centre armrest and reading lamps, six speakers (from four), auto wipers, powered tailgate with kick sensor and a 360-degree surround view camera. Safety wise, it’s seven airbags and a full ADAS pack with auto high beam and tyre pressure monitoring across the range, which is good.

At 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm tall, the S5 is 139 mm shorter, 52 mm narrower and 49 mm lower than the Proton eMas 7 and has a 20 mm shorter wheelbase. It’s slightly larger than the BYD Atto 3, though. There’s no frunk, but the 453-litre boot can be expanded to 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded, including the space under the boot floor.

Five colours are available – Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red and Elegant Latte. The latter is an exclusive tone for the Lux Long Range. The factory warranty is seven years or 150,000 km for the vehicle, eight years or 180,000 km for the EV battery and eight years or 160,000 km for the drive motor and motor control unit.

“With the official pricing now revealed, the MG S5 EV represents one of the best value propositions in the electric SUV segment. It’s not just about affordability, it’s about delivering advanced EV technology, spacious design, and premium features at a highly accessible price point. We’re excited to offer Malaysian customers a compelling EV choice that doesn’t compromise on performance, practicality or style,” said Emory QiFeng, MD of SAIC Motor Malaysia.

So, what do you think of the MG S5 EV’s looks and package next to the eMas 7 and Atto 3? Even if you’re set on one of those, surely there’s no harm checking out a compatriot in the same price bracket? Try out the S5 EV for size at MG’s ‘Dare to Love’ roadshow, happening at Mid Valley Megamall’s centre court from today till May 25 (Sunday). Test drives are available.
