2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid confirmed for the US – likely to get Crosstrek Hybrid’s series-parallel system
The hybrid version of the sixth-generation Subaru Forester will arrive for the 2025 model year in the United States instead of 2026 as previously believed. This will join the existing non-hybrid model that was revealed last November.
Subaru of America isn’t providing much in the way of details for now, but it is assumed that the Forester Hybrid will share the same powertrain with the Crosstrek Hybrid. The latter, currently in its third generation (and previously known as the XV), got a Toyota-derived ‘Strong Hybrid’ system in Japan in October this year.
The series-parallel e-Boxer system uses a FB25 2.5 litre naturally-aspirated boxer-four petrol engine that makes 160 PS (158 hp or 118 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 209 Nm of torque from 4,000 to 4,400 rpm – the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard too. This is augmented by a MC2 electric motor rated at 120 PS (118 hp or 88 kW) and 270 Nm, while another motor serves as a generator.
Along with an E-CVT (electronic continuously variable transmission) and a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery, the hybrid system is claimed to provide a combined fuel consumption of 18.9 km/l following the WLTC standard.
The 63-litre fuel tank is also larger than the 48-litre unit used in the non-Strong Hybrid version of the e-Boxer that is a mild hybrid with a smaller-displacement FB20 2.0 litre engine and a less powerful electric motor. As a result, the Strong Hybrid e-Boxer is claimed to deliver around 1,000 km of range on a full tank.
