The Grammy Award has returned! A night to celebrate anything and everything music. Artists from all over the globe, nominated or not, came together to enjoy the momentous occasion and support those who have worked tirelessly to leave their mark on the music industry.
We got to see a lot of familiar faces coming back to grace the stage but of course, apart from the amazing performances, fashion and iconic moments, one of the highlights of this award show is seeing the nominees winning their first Grammy. In no particular order, here are 10 talented artists winning their first-ever Grammy awards:
Miley Cyrus
- Awards won: 2
- Categories: Best Pop Solo Performance, Record of the Year
- Fun fact: This is Miley’s third time being nominated for Grammy Awards. This year, the singer was nominated for a total of 6 Grammys, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. She won a total of 2.
- Acceptance speech: “I was stuck in traffic and was afraid that I was gonna miss this moment. I was fine with missing the Grammys but not Mariah Carey. This award is my butterfly. Thank you!”
- Acceptance speech #2: “Not everyone will win a Grammy but everyone in this world is spectacular. Thank you to everyone on my team, my label and my family. I don’t think I’ve forgotten anyone, but I may have forgotten underwear. Bye!”
Victoria Monét
- Awards won: 3
- Categories: Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical
- Fun fact: This is the second time the R&B artist was nominated for a Grammy but the first time as a performing artist. She previously worked on other Grammy-nominated songs such as Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings”. Tonight, she walked away with 3 Grammys.
- Acceptance speech: “Thank you to my mom. A single mom raising this bad girl. This award was a 15-year pursuit and thank you to my manager for taking a chance on me. We are all the best versions of ourselves tonight. Thank you again to the Recording Academy.”
Karol G
- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best Música Urbana Album
- Fun fact: This is the Columbian singer’s first time attending the Grammys and being nominated for the prestigious award.
- Acceptance speech: “I’m super happy, nervous and excited to be standing here in front of so many legends whom I admire and respect. Thank you to my fans, I promise I’ll give you my best, always!”
Boygenius
- Awards won: 2
- Categories: Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance
- Fun fact: The group debuted just a year ago and their album “The Record” took the rock and indie music scene by storm. One of their members also won a Grammy as a solo/featured artist the same night.
- Acceptance speech: “This is incredible. We were just screaming backstage. Constantly screaming. Thank you to our families, thank you so much! Bye!”
Phoebe Bridgers

- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
- Fun fact: “Ghost in the Machine” is a duet song by SZA and Phoebe Bridgers and it was the latter’s first time being nominated as a solo artist. SZA posted on IG story to thank the Recording Academy and Phoebe for singing the song with her.
Zach Bryan
- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best Country Duo/Group Performance
- Fun fact: This is Zach’s second time being nominated for a Grammy. The country artist was also nominated for Best Country Album this year for his acclaimed chart-topping self-titled album “Zach Bryan.”
Lil Durk
- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best Melodic Rap Performance
- Fun fact: When Lil Durk collaborated with J. Cole on “All My Life”, the two rappers texted each other saying that the song was Grammy-worthy.
Tyla
- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best African Music Performance
- Fun fact: Best African Music Performance is a new category that was added to this year’s Grammy Awards and among the nominees for this category apart from Tyla included Burna Boy, ASAKE, Davido, and Ayra Star.
- Acceptance speech: “I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22! Thank you to God, my team, my family. I know my mother is crying somewhere in here. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this important category!”
Coco Jones
- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best R&B Performance
- Fun fact: Coco Jones has been in the music industry since 2010 and has actually never put out a full-length album. She finally earned her first Grammy nomination and win with her single “ICU” from her latest EP “What I Didn’t Tell You”.
Peso Pluma

- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best Música Mexicana Album
- Fun fact: This is Peso’s first-ever Grammy nomination and win. He was also one of the acts to perform at last year’s Coachella.
Lainey Wilson
- Awards won: 1
- Categories: Best Country Album
- Fun fact: This is Lainey’s first time being nominated for a Grammy Award. Apart from the Best Country Album category, she was also nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for the song “Save Me” with Jelly Roll.
- Acceptance speech: “This is my very first Grammy! Thank you so much to my collaborators and everyone involved in making this album. I’m from a small farming community of 200 people and God bless every single one of y’all. Thank you to the Recording Academy and to my fans. I love y’all so much!”
