Anime-nia: New “Ghost In The Shell” In The Works & Best-Selling Mangas For April!

Rejoice, 90’s anime aficionados! The dystopian sci-fi manga, “Ghost In The Shell” is getting a brand new anime adaptation. Going by the same name, this reinterpretation of the 1989 manga is set to hit the airwaves sometime in 2026.

To go along with this announcement, a teaser trailer and a key visual were unveiled, just for the fans.

Not much is known about this iteration of the popular IP, but it is theorised that this version of the anime will be more faithful to the original manga. We assume as much, thanks to the teaser trailer showcasing panels from the original manga. Furthermore, previous adaptations over the years, be they anime or movies, had a tendency to deviate from the original source material.

The original art style has also received some much-needed love and attention, and we can be sure of that thanks to the key visual. Brace yourselves; we are about to receive an authentic “Ghost In The Shell” anime adaptation that people in the 90s were clamouring for (if they read the source material that is). Not only that, but Science Saru, the Japanese animation studio in charge of bringing the manga to life, has an excellent track record of maintaining continuity with the original manga.

Though we have seen amazing interpretations of the story throughout the years, only a few ever came close, the most noteworthy of which was the PlayStation game. Regardless, this is an excellent rebound after the atrocious live-action “Ghost in the Shell” movie back in 2017.

This is a good thing too, as people have been pivoting towards the more mature and even adult side of the anime/manga spectrum as of late.

According to the POS tracking giant, Circana BookScan, people (specifically those in the US) have been purchasing a substantial amount of mature graphic novels in the month of April 2024 alone. On the board are popular titles such as “One Piece,”  “Chainsaw Man,”  and “Demon Slayer”. At the apex of this list is “Jujustu Kaisen,”  followed by “Berserk Deluxe (HC)” and “SPY x FAMILY”.

Of course, there are some slice of life and romcom mangas as well, such as “Komi Can’t Communicate” and “My Dress-Up Darling”.

So what does this mean for the anime landscape as a whole? Well, for starters, since the US is one of the largest markets outside Japan, unless some groundbreaking issue comes out, we are definitely going to see more mature manga coming out. Given that we aren’t going to see much change outside of Japan, as they are primarily concerned with catering to their own fanbase, if this continues, all the way say 2026, the “Ghost In The Shell” reboot will definitely fit right in and maybe even spark interest in the original manga.
