Green Lantern is a name that has become iconic in the world of comic book lore, representing one of the oldest and most enduring superhero franchises in DC Comics. Like many popular DC superheroes, Green Lantern was adapted into a movie in 2011, featuring Ryan Reynolds in the lead role. Despite its potential to become a major DC franchise, the film was widely criticised for its weak storyline and poor CGI, ultimately earning negative reviews.
Since a brief cameo from a Green Lantern Corps member in Justice League, we haven’t seen the famous green ring appear in any other DC live-action project. However, this year, fans will be introduced to a new TV series called “Lanterns,” featuring the Green Lantern Corps. But is that all there is to “Lanterns”? Here’s what we know about the highly anticipated series:
What Does The Director Think Of “Lanterns“?

The newly appointed DC Studios co-CEO, James Gunn, is taking on the monumental task of reimagining the DC Universe (DCU) alongside film producer Peter Safran. Together, they are committed to revitalising the franchise by infusing it with fresh narratives and engaging character arcs that resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
As for “Lanterns,” Gunn has expressed his excitement about the project, highlighting its potential to explore the complex dynamics of the Green Lantern Corps in a way that has never been seen before. He envisions the series as a pivotal part of the broader DC narrative, emphasising its role in connecting different storylines across the universe.
What Are “Lanterns” About?

The “Lanterns” TV show is set to focus on the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic law enforcement agency tasked with maintaining peace and order across the universe. The series will follow two of the most well-known Green Lanterns from the comics—Hal Jordan and John Stewart—as they embark on various missions to protect different sectors of space.
While not many details have been officially released, the show is expected to adopt a darker, more serious tone, incorporating elements of mystery and crime investigation. It has been described as a “True Detective”-style series, suggesting a gritty, grounded approach to the storyline, where the two Green Lanterns will uncover significant threats – not only to Earth but possibly to the entire universe.
Who Are The Cast Members?

Two talented actors have since been casted in the highly anticipated “Lanterns” series. Kyle Chandler, known for his roles in “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline,” will portray Hal Jordan, one of the most iconic members of the Green Lantern Corps. Joining him is Aaron Pierre, recognised for his performances in “Old” and “Krypton,” who will take on the role of John Stewart, another beloved Green Lantern. Fans are eager to see how these two actors bring these legendary characters to life on screen, especially given their proven talent in previous roles.
When Will It Release?

As of now, there is no official release date announced by the director. However, DC Studios plans to begin filming in January 2025 and is currently in the process of casting. Given the extensive use of VFX and green screens expected for this project, it’s likely that the release might be pushed to 2026. Despite the long wait, the TV show is expected to wrap up filming by June 2025. Currently, the DCU has several movies and series lined up for release in 2025, including “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which might be released alongside “Lanterns.”
Where Can You Watch “Lanterns”?

The TV series will be released as an HBO Max exclusive series, which has now been rebranded as Max. Since other Green Lantern series and DC series are available on Max, it makes sense for “Lanterns“ to join the platform. Other Green Lantern shows, such as the “Justice League” animated series and “Green Lantern: The Animated Series,” can also be found on Max.
