GEORGE TOWN: A second case of African swine fever (ASF) has been detected at a pig farm in Valdor, Seberang Perai Selatan, leading to the farm’s closure.
Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the veterinary services department had issued orders to cull more than 1,000 livestock there.
“As the Valdor area has 42 pig farms, we have decided that this disaster will be upgraded from the district to the state level, because the district office has limited resources,” he told reporters.
He had also instructed the state secretary to hold a disaster management meeting tomorrow to discuss the ASF issue.

Penang veterinary services director Dr Saira Banu Rejab said a positive result for ASF was obtained from livestock at the farm this morning, and an immediate order was issued to cease operations.
She said census data showed there are 124 pig farms in Penang involving a total of 267,348 pigs.
Yesterday, an ASF case was detected at a pig farm, also in Valdor, Sungai Bakap.
