At long last, the sequel to 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse has released a much-awaited second look at the feature and boyyyyy, is it epic! We mean like, strings-of-webs-everywhere-all-at-once-epic!
Yup, holy spidery macaroni. Just like the citadel of Ricks in “Rick and Morty”, there’s a whole city of Spider-People that will be entering the fray within the animated franchise and gosh we had a field day trying to peer at all of them.
So, we do not know what the deal is but we know that Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 brought them all together as part of his Spider-Force.
There are a lot of Spider-People out there that make up the team. Yup… Ninjas, apes, werewolves, etc. So, we’re gonna list them down and break it all up into nice little bits for ya. Let’s web into it!
SPIDER-WOMAN
Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman is finally making her film debut in “Across The Spider-Verse” but there’s a little twist.
Jessica Drew has indeed been around since the 70s but she’s not simply a copy of Peter Parker. In actual fact, she started off as a brainwashed HYDRA agent, but eventually found her way to the light side.
In the comics, she can blast bio-electrical energy, which she calls venom blasts, and also secrete a sticky fluid from her palms. However, it seems as though she secretes webs directly from her fingers in this film.
In the trailer, she’s seen fending off The Vulture while riding some sweet wheels. And she’s doing it while PREGNANT? Damn girl! So, it definitely looks like they’re drawing from the 2015 storyline featuring Jessica as an expecting mom, which is actually pretty insane.
INSOMNIAC SPIDER-MAN
This one was very easy to spot. The distinctive white logo of Insomniac Games’ wall-crawler might have divided some fans at first. Nevertheless, once the actual game was released, its fanbase grew significantly due to the critical success the game was having.
Indeed, the outfit made a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in “Into The SpiderVerse” as part of Peter’s collection of suits in the Parker basement.
Furthermore, this will not be the only time we Insomniac’s Spider-Man next year as a follow-up to the 2018 game will also be released.
SPINNERET
Our second lady on this list might be a little more familiar to fans as she’s a household name. She needs no introduction as she is in fact, Mary Jane Watson.
This alternate version of Mary Jane is from a 2015 run called “Renew Your Vows”. In this universe, Peter Parker and Mary Jane are married and have a child. However, she feels like sharing her husband’s burden of crime fighting. So, she dons a suit which allows her to siphon Peter’s powers and uses the codename ‘Spinneret’.
We’re wondering if Zoe Kravitz will reprise her role in “Across The Spider-Verse” but this time as a heroic Mary Jane.
SPIDERLING
Annie Parker is the daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane from the aforementioned “Renew Your Vows”. Like her mom, she wears a suit and fights crime. Yup, it’s as simple as that. Unless you count the extra angst that comes when dealing with a teenager, then we guess, it isn’t so easy.
LADY SPIDER
While we initially thought that this was Iron Spider (you can’t blame the extra arms), this steampunk wall-crawler is actually pretty cool.
This version of ‘Aunt’ May (in fact, she isn’t an aunt at all) built her own suit from spare parts in her dad’s garage, creating an outfit that had four mechanical arms. And that’s how she became a steampunk Lady Spider of New York!
MANGAVERSE SPIDER-MAN
Now, listen to these few words. Peter Parker… is a ninja… taught by his sensei, Uncle Ben.
Yes, the Mangaverse Spidey is already top-tier with that. One of the last ninjas of the Spider Clan, this Spidey experienced his loss of Uncle Ben at the hands of Venom, who is serving Kingpin. Man, this is crazy enough already.
CAPTAIN SPIDER
What happens when you give Spider-Man’s number one fan the powers of Spider-Man? Well, he wouldn’t want to fight him either.
Originally appearing in a “What If?” issue, Flash Thompson was still the high school jock who bullied Peter. Nevertheless, he accidentally got bitten by the radioactive spider and soon tested his abilities. However, since he wasn’t a man of science, he never developed webbing to swing around.
Ultimately, it didn’t end well for this version as he fell to the ground while fighting the Vulture from a great height. Without any webbing, to help with the fall, he landed and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
BOMBASTIC BAGMAN
We died when we saw this in the trailer. But there he IS! Bombastic BagMan is literally… Spider-Man… with a paper bag… over his head…
Traditionally, this rag-bag look has been accompanied by a Fantastic Four outfit as this happened right after lovebirds Venom and Peter broke up. Yup, it was ugly because Venom took everything and left, even Peter’s clothes.
So, who did Peter turn to? Well, his friends in the Baxter building, of course, gave him a spare suit and a paper bag from their meal at Five Guys the day before. Should have smelled nice, hopefully.
WEREWOLF SPIDER-MAN
Probably 2022 Best Actor Nominee Andrew Garfield.
Oh, apologies, good sir. We thought it was you.
Ah, you see, as the name suggests, this version of Spidey was infected with a Werewolf virus. He was part of an army that consumed the Cosmic being, Galactus, and even squared off against Ash (of the “Living Dead” franchise). So, he isn’t one to be underestimated.
SCARLET SPIDER
Ben Reilly has an infamous history in Marvel Comics as he was introduced as part of the Clone Saga in 1975. While originally debuting in the 70s, he was later brought back during the 1990s run whereby he was revealed to be the original Spider-Man. And Peter Parker was a clone… WHAT!?
Thankfully, after some fan backlash, an Uno Reverse card was played and Ben Reilly was revealed to be the clone. He was killed off by the end of that saga, saving Peter Parker, and leaving the original to continue his journey.
Despite that, Ben Reilly has continued to be a major part of the lore, assuming the mantle of the Scarlet Spider during his return.
KAINE
Kaine is another version of the Scarlet Spider. But nope, he’s not the second, nor the third. He’s actually the fifth to assume the mantle.
Also another clone of Peter Parker, Kaine was another experiment of the Jackal. Indeed, he showed signs of degeneration and his unstable nature prompted Jackal to discard him.
Despite that, Kaine is pretty formidable. He is able to burn his victim’s faces with a handprint known as the “Mark of Kaine”. Besides, he also possesses precognitive abilities, which is a slightly heightened version of the conventional Spider-Sense.
Once he had his redemption arc, he assumed the title of the Scarlet Spider in an all-red and black ensemble.
SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED
Spider-Man Unlimited was a shortlived animated series by Saban Entertainment that was meant to be a follow-up to the 90s Animated Series. it ran for 1 season before ultimately being cancelled on a cliffhanger.
At least, he’s getting some sort of continuation here. Unless he dies, of course… which would be sad.
MAYDAY PARKER
Annie Parker isn’t the only Parker Jr. In an alternate future, Mary Jane and Peter had a child named Mayday, who also developed her father’s webbed traits. Soon enough, she became a superhero in her own right.
As a matter of fact, there will be 2 Mayday Parkers in “Across The Spider-Verse”. One will be a grown version. And the other will feature a little bit more as Peter B. Parker’s infant child that he is seen carrying around. Hell yeah! Bebies.
ARAÑA
Caught between a clash of clans, Anya Corazon almost lost her life before a mage gave her spider powers. As a Hunter for the Spider Society, she adopts the title, Araña, and creates an exoskeletal suit with a variety of Spider-like gadgets.
Araña is also rumoured to make her debut in live-action form in the Dakota Johnson-led “Madame Web” in which she will be played by Isabela Merced.
SPIDER ARMOR MK 1
Tee-Bee-Haych, this is a cheat. Spider-Armour Mk I is in actual fact, a suit rather than a character on his own. Originally built by Peter Parker based on a metal compound he developed, the suit made Spider-Man bulletproof. Nevertheless, it did slow him down.
Anyway, it was destroyed within the very same issue it debuted in, being consumed by acid. So much for armour, huh?
SPIDER ARMOR MK 2
Now, this armour is waaaay more remarkable than its silvery predecessor. And it’s got a green tint to it.
Again, this is a suit, but at least it had more of a function than being a mere bulletproof spider suit. To state the obvious, it is durable and can withstand an RPG impact. However, this suit comes with magnetic webbing which can be used to interfere with radio waves. Also, it did not slow him down like its predecessor.
SPIDER-COP
Now, we’re back to variants. Hailing from Earth 19119, this version protects and serves within New York’s Police Department.
SPIDER-MAN INDIA
This Spider-Man takes amusing spins on the original as this alternate take brings the audience to India.
Pavitr Prabhakar hails from Mumbai where he lives with his aunt Maya and Uncle Bhim. Despite his academic abilities, he is always bullied and put down with only Meera Jain being his friend.
However, one day, he encounters a yogi who grants him the powers of a spider to fight a rising evil. And soon enough, with tragedy and lessons about responsibility, Pavitr becomes a true Spider-Man.
The original design is fairly similar to the original with the only deviation being an extra dhoti over it. Nevertheless, “Across the SpiderVerse” is set to spice things up with a different design altogether which is more colourful and vibrant.
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN
While it initially began as a sadistic survival trick by Peter’s nemesis, Otto Octavius, the Superior Spider-Man did eventually live up to its title. During this run, Doc Ock, dying in his frail body captures Peter and swaps their consciousnesses. Peter eventually dies in Octavius’ body but not before letting him know that he wishes for a new Spidey to protect New York.
Inspired by Peter’s dying wish, Octavius sets out to prove himself to be a ‘superior’ hero than Peter could have ever been. Combining the designs that used to extend from his old body, the Superior hero eventually becomes a force for good and a better Octavius altogether.
SIX-ARMED SPIDER-MAN
We know. A spider has eight legs and so Marvel did the math and added additional limbs for our beloved hero.
Why? Because Peter got all guilt-ridden about being Spider-Man and having his loved ones hurt that he decided he wanted to end the alter ego. Except… he watched some videos from 5-Minute Crafts, forgot lessons from his enemy, The Lizard, and DIY-ed it. Voila, six arms! Freaky!
Nevertheless, the best thing to spawn from this saga isn’t actually the idea of having an arachnid-based character be closer to its anatomical basis. Rather, it’s even more well-known as the origin of Dr Michael Morbius, who most recently had his own film!
So, if it wasn’t for Peter being an idiot, we wouldn’t have gotten the most movie of the year. And of course, now that we’ve said all that…
SPIDER-PUNK
Imagine Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. Then, imagine if he had Donald Glover’s face. Now, imagine the Billie Joe Armstrong/Donald Glover hybrid if he was bitten by a radioactive spider and lived. That’s what happened to Hobart ‘Hobie’ Brown.
Spider-Punk is a variation of the Prowler. Nevertheless, he isn’t Miles’ uncle, who we saw in the first movie. Rather, in the comics, he is the first iteration of the character in the comics.
Without a doubt, Spider-Punk is rad as hell due to his punk-rock appearance. He sometimes swings around with a guitar in hand, rocking out while he kicks some ass.
WEB-MAN
All you need to know is that Web-Man is a mirror of Spider-Man and has one weakness: stupidity.
EARTH X SPIDER-MAN
First appearing in 1999, Earth X Spider-Man shares much of what 616 Peter went through except he became a television star once he got his powers. He also developed organic webbing at a later stage.
Pretty much, Earth X Spider-Man is notable because he went through a fat phase. Kinda like Thor in “Endgame”. And he actually fought while in that state and worked to get back into shape.
SPIDER-MONKEY
Part of “Marvel Apes”, Spider-Monkey is basically… ape Spider-Man? Yes, that’s about it.
Only thing is that, unlike his human counterpart, Spider-Monkey was part of a justice system which killed villains who did not wish to reform. Probably could have bribed him with a banana first…
SPIDER-MAN 2099
We’ve saved the best for last. yes, Miguel O’Hara hails from Nueva York in 2099. After attempting to recreate the original Spider-Man’s abilities in others, he suffers from a mishap which results in his genetic code being altered with an arachnid’s.
Now, donning a sleek red and blue look, the Spider-Man of 2099 roams the cityscape, fighting crime with his venomous fangs to provide a nasty kick to his enemies.
He first appeared in the post-credits scene for “Into The Spider-Verse” and he’ll be featured much more prominently in this sequel. We’re still unsure as to why he has beef with Miles and the gang. But it’s an interesting shake-up. Spider-People: Civil War, anyone?
